Job description

  • Overview The Assistant Teacher I will support the teachers who serve a varied population of students in the Kennedy Krieger Schools.
  • The incumbent assists with the implementation of the program as outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) of each student and with adapting instruction that meets the individual academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs of the students.
  • At the Lifeskills and Education for Students with Autism and Pervasive Behavioral Challenges ( LEAP ) Program, our mission is to ensure each of our students gains the independence and skills necessary to fully participate in school, community, workplace, and home life.
  • Our specialized autism program is a nonpublic special education day program approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.
  • We offer a range of educational and therapeutic services for students with complex academic, communication, social, and behavioral needs.
  • Our program emphasizes the development of lifelong skills through an active approach to learning, including participation in community and work-based learning opportunities that allow them to apply skills outside of the classroom.

Responsibilities

Assist with the implementation of instruction in accordance with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), in cooperation with the Special Education Teacher and using effective strategies for academic and behavioral success. Complete instructional-related duties as assigned by the Special Education Teacher and administrators. Provide instruction, oversight, and classroom management under the direction of the Special Education Teacher. Implement behavioral protocols and assignments for students during instructional and non-instructional times. Utilize instructional and non-instructional times in a professional manner in keeping with administrative guidelines. Participate in and contribute to in-service training and staff meetings. Provide support and leadership for curricular and extra-curricular activities that support student-life and promote a positive school experience. Assist with the implementation of technology in instructional design and delivery in accordance with supervising teacher’s directions. Assist with the implementation of instruction in relation to Maryland Core Learning Goals, Skills for Success, Content Standards, and specific Industry Standards.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to transport (i.e., escort, carry, or lift) and immobilize/restrain students requiring behavioral management support. Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry a minimum weight of 25 pounds. Must be able to kneel, bend, stoop, twist, and run. Must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.

Qualifications

Professional Crisis Management (PCM) training will be provided by the department. The employee must achieve and maintain certification according to the timeline established by the department. May be required to achieve, possess, and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and First Aide certification. The department will provide a limited amount of certification opportunities and employee may obtain and provide documented evidence of required certification from an external provider. EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree in education, special education, or related area preferred. EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working in a classroom of students with disabilities is preferred. Minimum pay range USD $17.76/Hr. Maximum pay range USD $28.99/Hr.
