- For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness.
- Early Childhood Development Centers provide free Head Start services to low-income families at no cost to the children ages 3 to 5 years.
- The high-quality services are offered in the center-based program settings available for the Brooklyn and Queens Communities.
- Through the Montessori approach, the centers ensure children are ready for school by providing a variety of developmentally appropriate activities that promote cognitive, social, emotional, language-literacy, and physical development.
- The Head Start Program strives to actively engage parents, recognizing family participation throughout the program, as a key to a child’s robust development as well as to offer the learning experiences tailored to the changing needs and abilities of children.
- STATEMENT OF THE JOB The Assistant Teacher will assist the Teacher to plan and execute age and developmentally appropriate activities reflecting the Montessori curriculum.
- Responsibilities include but are not limited to assist the Teacher to maintain the written documentation/reports in order to meet compliance standards of CCNS, ACS, DOH, CACFP, and other overseeing agencies relevant to NYFD; help to facilitate parent involvement in all aspects of the program and promote positive growth and professional development.
- The candidate will adhere to policies and procedures established by CCNS, ACS, DOH, DOE, and CACFP and comply with procedural norms and standards of attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality relevant to HIPPA.
- Ensures a learning environment based on the Montessori approach that helps the children develop, physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively, and creatively.
- Complete written observations, progress reports, outcomes reporting, CROWD, and other documents relevant to the tracking of children’s progress.
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with parents/families via open communications, training and other developmental activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential required plus a Study Plan to obtain an Associate’s Degree or Bachelors in Early Childhood Education or in related filed to Early Childhood Education (Elementary Education, Nursery to 6th Grade Elementary Education, Special Education, Students with Disabilities Birth to 2nd Grade). 30 credits; 60 credits or Associates Degree; 90 credits; or Bachelor’s Degree preferred including 24 credits in Early Childhood Education or in related filed to Early Childhood Education (Elementary Education, Nursery to 6th Grade Elementary Education, Special Education, Students with Disabilities Birth to 2nd Grade). 2 years teaching experience in a pre-school classroom preferred. Montessori trained or must commit to enroll in the Agency’s Montessori training program within the first year of hire and complete the training as required. Bilingual Spanish/English; Russian/English; Chinese/English; Korean/English; English/Creole speaking preferred. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, seeing, stooping, kneeling crawling, crouching. Occasional running. Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Ability to travel to multiple locations within the five boroughs as needed.
