Job description

Position summary

The English Language Arts Teacher, under the supervision of the High School Principal will provide an active learning environment where all students can excel, academically, physically and socially.

Primary duties

  • Prepare lesson plans, IEP’s and establish evaluation techniques for assessment of progress
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student progress
  • Able to work effectively with a wide range of students and be able to use differentiated instruction
  • Competence with a variety of instructional strategies
  • Ability to use technology effectively to support instruction
  • Planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Incorporates high standards of professional ethics: models the qualities of fairness, equity, integrity and honesty in professional dealings with others
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents and the community
  • Comply with school policies and procedures and supports the mission, purpose and vision of the school
  • Comply with state mandated NYS Standards and modify the standards to meet the needs of all students
  • Supports the school’s Strategic Planning initiative with an emphasis on strengthening culture. Demonstrates commitment to the school purpose, vision, and mission.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and administrators
  • Demonstrated knowledge of content area
  • Ability to establish rapport and build professional relationships with students
  • Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills

Education and experience

  • New York State Certification-Teacher of the Deaf
  • New York State Certification – Certification in areas of ELA
  • Knowledge of New York State Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including proficiency in English and American Sign Language (ASL)
