Job Description

Brown University Athletics and Recreation is seeking candidates for the Assistant Coach, Women’s Ice Hockey position. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 38 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-DI). The Third Assistant Coach, Women’s Ice Hockey is primarily responsible for coaching and developing goaltenders. The Third Assistant Coach is also responsible for supporting the Head Coach in the leadership and development of student athletes. This role focuses on teaching athletic skills, fostering student athlete character, and game strategy. This position is also responsible for executing the daily operations of the program, including but not limited to recruitment coordination, travel arrangements and scheduling. Education and Experience ● Bachelor’s Degree with 1-2 years of coaching experience. In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, a minimum of 5 years direct related experience is required. ● Coaching experience in intercollegiate athletics, professional athletics, elite amateur sport, or a comparable competitive environment. Job Competencies Indicate the essential job competencies. Competencies are required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job successfully. ● Strong understanding of the sport’s rules, techniques, and strategies. ● Knowledge of athlete development principles, including strength, conditioning, and skill progression. ● Understanding of team dynamics, sportsmanship, and athlete wellness. ● Ability to instruct athletes effectively in practices, drills, and skill development. ● Strong communication skills for providing feedback to athletes and collaborating with coaching staff. ● Organizational skills to manage practice plans, training schedules, and game preparation. ● Observation and evaluation skills to monitor athlete performance and identify development needs. ● Basic recruiting support skills, including evaluating prospective student-athletes and providing recommendations. ● Ability to provide constructive feedback and guidance to athletes, enhancing individual and team performance. ● Ability to work collaboratively within the coaching staff to support game strategy and player development. ● Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support the team in high-pressure or competitive situations. ● Ability to maintain compliance with all University and NCAA/Ivy League policies. All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the compliance office and appropriate parties. Employees in coaching positions must receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting by the compliance office and maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division).
