Department: Centers for Learning Excellence General Statement of Job The Student Learning Assistant provides academic learning support for students as directed, including tutoring students, conducting supplemental instruction, and performing other learning support duties, and assisting with the daily operations of the college's learning centers. Essential Functions: Provides educational assistance to students in specific discipline to improve understanding and comprehension of the subject. Leads efforts to create and/or present content workshop for students. Attends classes and/or holds study sessions for student participation as required. Integrates study strategy techniques with the course content. Provides individual and group instruction to students on a variety of subjects using a distance learning format. Attends lectures and functions as a model student in the programmatic framework. Develops and maintains working relationships with the course content instructor, student participants, and appropriate supervisor. Keeps regular and accurate records using required software, related forms and submits appropriate paperwork in a timely manner. Engages in the promotion and presentation of information about academic support services and resources at the Centers for Learning Excellence. Assists in serving as a Centers for Learning Excellence liaison with faculty and staff in the interest of student success as directed by supervisor. Participates in required departmental training, workshops and meetings, conducting routine trainings as needed. Supervises part-time staff, as needed. Travels throughout the college district, as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience To qualify, one of the following must be met: Associate's degree A minimum of 60 earned college hours Knowledge in subject areas of English (any discipline), political science (any discipline), math (any discipline), or science (any discipline) required: must have completed 12 hours in any of these areas and demonstrated mastery of sufficient coursework in the subject, earning at least a “B”. Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills. Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others. Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret related professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance. College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification, preferred.
