General Summary: Professional Counselor I, Student Counseling Services provides crisis assessment, individual and group counseling to enrolled students who are experiencing social, emotional, behavioral or academic difficulty. This staff member must work collaboratively with other departments when assisting students.
Counseling and Clinical Tasks Delivery of counseling and crisis intervention services to students. Able to provide initial triage session interviews and associated clinical referral to college students. Competency in providing short-term individual counseling- primarily in the areas of anxiety, depression and relationships. Ability to work with sensitive information safeguarding confidentiality of records and student information. Non-clinical Tasks- outreach and referral Experience in referring to external agencies in an effort to provide the most appropriate care to students. (LMHA and Psychiatric Hospitals) Provides consultation and outreach services to campus and community members related to mental health issues and student concerns. Intake and referral for non-resident on-line students to MH resources Act as a liaison between Student Counseling Services, other university departments and community agencies. Maintains 100% compliance with timely completion of required System, University and job-specific online training courses. Necessary Qualifications: Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Clinical Psychology or other MH discipline requiring licensure. Practical/field placement relevant to college counseling, or supervised experience related to job function. LPC, LPC-A, LCSW, LP or LMFT or eligibility for licensure within 2.5 years of hire date. Must maintain licensure for continued employment. Ability to work collaboratively with students and other professionals in an occasionally hectic clinic environment. Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills. Organizational, writing, and public speaking abilities required. Meets ethical obligations for timely documentation of counseling services per State of Texas licensure requirements. Proficient in assessment, diagnosis and in providing empirically based treatment interventions for mental health conditions. Experience with providing crisis assessment & appropriate acute intervention. Periodic work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
One (1) year of experience in suicide crisis response planning. Behavioral Health/Counseling experience in a Higher Education setting. License to supervise mental health interns or provisionally licensed individuals. Experience in developing applicable programing to work settings. Knowledge and competency in working in Point and Click EMR software.
