Job description

Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) – Social Sciences and Education Tutoring Center

The Social Sciences and Education Tutoring Center is seeking applicants to fill the Instructional Student Assistant position.

Position Overview

At CSUB’s Tutoring Centers, we believe that learning is a social process, not a solitary one. Our mission is to promote student success and independence by providing a welcoming environment for dialogue and feedback. Tutors provide support to students across a wide range of concepts, assignments, and students’ needs.

Anticipated Appointment Dates

This position is open until it is filled.

Fall 2026: August 17, 2026 – December 19, 2026

Spring 2027: January 20, 2027 – May 26, 2027

Hours: 0-20 hours per week

  • Tutoring Job Expectations
  • Tutors provide support service at all levels of competency including, but not limited to problem solving, conceptual analysis, strategic study skills, reading comprehension, writing and exam preparation.
  • Tutors provide assistance for a broad range of academic activities: assigned homework; exam studying; research papers; language lab assignments and projects
  • Tutors work with professors to provide assistance to groups and individuals. Tutors may also be asked to work regularly with students who speak English as a second language or students with special needs or circumstances.
  • Tutors work proactively to encourage student use of the Tutoring Center services, including outreach to classroom visits, communication with tutees, and distribution of flyers.
  • Tutors help Tutoring Center Coordinator and Lead Tutor with administrative tasks and special projects, as needed.
  • Tutors attend required meetings and trainings.

Tutoring Center Tutor Qualifications

  • To be considered for employment in the Social Sciences and Education Tutoring Center:
  • Students must have demonstrated significant subject expertise. This expertise may be confirmed by faculty recommendation, successful completion of tutored courses, and/or demonstrated success in related courses.

  • Tutoring Center Tutor Responsibilities and Duties

    • To continue to be hired as tutors at the CSUB Tutoring Centers, students must
    • Tutors must support their colleagues in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of this support service.
    • Tutors must maintain the confidentiality of our clients and services.
    • Tutors must be dependable and punctual in their duties, in the completion of assigned tasks, and in notifying the appropriate staff personnel when conflicts or problems occur.
    • Duties include tutoring members of the CSUB campus community; regular attendance at staff meetings; maintaining orderliness and operation of the Center (opening and closing TC, cleaning TC, checking students in/out of RunnerConnect, checking supplies, filing, administrative tasks, flexibility in work hours to ensure adequate coverage, etc.); assisting and mentoring tutor trainees; notifying supervisor of needs or difficulties; raising awareness of tutoring services through flyer distribution and class visits; providing input and suggestions to improve our operation; other tasks as assigned by supervisor or Tutor Center Coordinator.
    • Tutors must organize and facilitate study groups, ranging in size from 4-15 students, including effective communication about the time, date and location.
    • Tutors must provide brief classroom presentations regarding the Tutoring Center services.
    • Tutors must communicate via email or phone with tutees to arrange tutor appointments and encourage use of the services
    • Tutors must participate effectively in training sessions and staff meetings.

    Application Procedures

    The review of applications will begin immediately and may continue for next semester. For full consideration, the application and all required materials must be submitted by August 14th for Fall Semester and January 18th for Spring Semester. The following documents are required to upload:

    • Resume: Your curriculum Vita or CV, is the academic equivalent of a resume. It should contain your contact information, your employment and educational history, skills such as computer programming, familiarity with commonly used computer programs, as well as internships, awards, volunteer service, training and any other experience you have that is relevant to education. 3. Current unofficial transcripts from your undergraduate and graduate education. If you had attended more than one institution, please copy and combine these transcripts into one document. 4. List of three references. The online applications will request you to enter your three references separate from your CV. The letters of reference may be requested by the committee.     Instructional Student Assistant additional information regarding assignment

    • Salary: The salary range for Instructional Student Assistants starts at $17.86 per hour. Each Department has a different salary scale. Please check with your department for your Base Salary.
    • Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the candidate.
    • Duties
    • Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11 (https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/faculty-staff/labor-and-employee-relations/Pages/unit11-uaw.aspx [https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/faculty-staff/labor-and-employee-relations/Pages/unit11-uaw.aspx]) a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department Instructional Student Assistant position.
    • Instructional Student Assistant positions are for matriculated students at CSUB.
    • Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.

    Education Code 89521 Requirements

    Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended.
