POSITION OVERVIEW The School Nurse provides support in addressing the health needs of students; assisting in implementing the school health program; and providing appropriate care and/or referral for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students.
Administer first aid and medication to students according to district policy and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provide direct professional nursing care to students, including first aid, illness, and injury care, using clinical decision-making within the nursing scope of practice.
The School Nurse administers prescription and over-the-counter medications in compliance with South Carolina law, provider orders, and district medication policies; maintain accurate medication documentation and secure storage.
Respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
Provide nursing care to students with chronic illnesses, such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, and severe allergies in alignment with provider orders.
The School Nurse develops, implements, and evaluates Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with special healthcare needs.
Participate as a member of IEP and Section 504 teams as needed for students with special healthcare needs.
Conduct required student health screenings and create a safe environment for the students.
Implement infection control practices and manage communicable disease situations according to South Carolina Department of Public Health guidance and district procedures.
Complete and maintain appropriate student health documentation and reporting.
Train and supervise designated unlicensed school personnel to perform approved health related tasks in accordance with the South Carolina Board of Nursing Advisory Standards; provide oversight and consultation when nursing care is delegated.
