Assist athletic training staff in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses. Provide supervised medical coverage for assigned teams, including practices and competitions. Support daily athletic training room operations, including treatment implementation and modality application. Maintain accurate medical documentation under the direction of supervising athletic trainers. Assist with injury tracking, rehabilitation programs, and return-to-play progression plans. Participate in implementation of emergency action plans and safety procedures. Travel with teams as assigned, under supervision. Assist with administrative tasks such as inventory management and general facility upkeep. Supervision and Scope of Practice Works under the direct supervision of licensed and certified athletic trainers. Clinical decision-making and return-to-play determinations remain the responsibility of supervising staff. This position is educational in nature and does not function as an independent healthcare provider within the department. Professional Development Participate in a structured mentorship program with senior athletic training staff. Attend weekly or bi-weekly educational sessions, including case studies and skill development. Gain exposure to: Collegiate healthcare models Insurance and claims processes Interdisciplinary care (team physicians, mental health, nutrition) Opportunities to assist with research, presentations, or departmental initiatives. Encouraged to pursue continuing education and professional certifications. Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited program. BOC certified (or certification eligible). Eligible for Texas state licensure. Strong desire to pursue a career in athletic training or sports medicine. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
Prior clinical rotations or internship experience in collegiate athletics. Interest in pursuing advanced roles in collegiate or professional sports medicine. Term of Appointment 10-month appointment aligned with the academic year. Designed as a temporary developmental role (typically 1–2 years maximum, non-renewable or limited renewal). Reporting Structure Reports to the Head Athletic Trainer / Director of Sports Medicine. Works under the daily supervision of assigned staff athletic trainers.
