  • Purpose of
  • Job: The counseling assistant provides support for the counseling department by maintaining records, gathering, and processing data for reports and providing resources for parents and students that assist the student in developing the academic, postsecondary, social/emotional skills necessary to be a productive member of society. To provide on-site direct support to the site staff and students in the overall management and operation of the school, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment. Assist with a wide range of tasks, including overseeing student discipline and fostering positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.

Essential Responsibilities Provides support for the school counseling department.

    Academic

    • Builds transcripts and schedules, maintains student records, academic plans, and transcript progression, advises students based on individual interests and aptitudes
    • Career: Assists in post-secondary readiness by maintaining up to date information regarding military, college, and trade school resources
    • Social/Emotional: Compiles resources for students and families and provides assistance in accessing social/emotional supports. Major Duties All Domains Provides support for counselors in implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. Maintains student records by requesting, sending, receiving, filing, and sorting records. Assists counselors in collecting evaluative data to ensure a successful counseling program which links the school counseling program to student academic progress. Gathers information and prepares reports regarding counseling, programming, and student success. Tracks student contact in MTSS log Maintains a working knowledge of counseling programs, services, and opportunities available to students to effectively communicate with all stakeholders. Academic Conducts academic advisement meetings to support students in successful completion of high school course requirements. Utilizes data from the student ICAP and assessments to create schedules and facilitate schedule changes. Maintains tracking system to ensure ICAP completion. Collaborates with departments to develop tools to track student progress and graduation progression and schedules quarterly counseling appointments to assess student progress and adjust graduation plans accordingly. Gathers, maintains, and processes transcripts for all students, completing audits, as necessary. Identifies at-risk students and track student progress towards graduation through transcript audits. Participates with regional teams to plan and coordinate graduation ceremonies. Career Develops and maintains databases with information regarding college, military, and post-secondary opportunities. Assists with concurrent enrollment, workplace learning and trade school students including registration, documentation, and progress monitoring. Conducts planning and advisement Success Plan meetings to determine student’s post-secondary Thrive Path (military, career, or college) Provides support for exposure to career and college enrichment activities. Social/Emotional Provides appropriate resources for students in crisis including referrals to school counselors, school social workers, or outside support agencies. Assists counselors in maintaining and following up on referrals to school and outside counseling agencies and support agencies. Collaborates with the region’s social work team to support the social/emotional wellbeing of all students. Supports counselor in identifying students for groups and lessons based on student needs.

Associate degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree and training in Education, Social Work, or related field preferred.

    Experience

    • Two years of experience working with youth preferred. Two years of experience working with students in a secondary school or school system preferred. Experience working with at risk youth preferred. Bilingual preferred but not required Or other background demonstrating application of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to serve on student-centered teams and participate in a collaborative decision-making process. Well-versed in conflict resolution skills. Ability to mediate conflicts (e.g., between students, staff, parents, or community members) while promoting the core values of GOAL effectively among all stakeholders. Understands the benefits of continuous learning and takes personal responsibility for professional development.
