Job description

In order to be considered, applicants must send a cover letter, resume, statement of philosophy of education, and contact information for three professional references to Kathryn Adelsberger, Ed.D., Principal at careers@mercyhighschool.com

Mercy High School is seeking candidates for a full-time Religion Teacher position beginning in August 2026. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching religion courses centered on the tenets and practices of Catholicism. Candidates should be academically strong and dedicated to educating a diverse community of young women in an environment that values intellectual curiosity, meaningful relationships, and spiritual growth. The successful candidate will recognize the unique role teachers play in the spiritual and religious development of young people, model critical inquiry and lifelong learning, and demonstrate integrity and fairness in all aspects of community life.

As a school authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP), Mercy's curriculum in grades 9 and 10 emphasizes concept-based instruction and structured inquiry as key pedagogical approaches. Courses at the upper levels are rigorous, engaging, and intellectually challenging. Mercy is also authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in grades 11 and 12. While previous experience with these programs is preferred, it is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and effectively implement the Religious Studies curriculum for five sections of Religious Studies courses. Specific course assignments will be determined based on the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs.
  • Use pedagogical best practices, learning standards, and assessments to drive student growth and achievement in alignment with Mercy’s expectations and the International Baccalaureate framework.
  • Create a positive, collaborative, and organized classroom environment.
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, participate on a grade-level team, and act as an IB Personal Project Supervisor. Moderate a student club or activity.
  • Maintain positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Collaborate with the department, grade-level teams, student services, and academic leadership to support student learning and success. Support and uphold the School’s mission.
  • Actively engage in professional growth by staying current with educational trends, participating in professional development opportunities, engaging in reflective practice, and attending all planning and faculty meetings.
  • Attend school events and chaperone activities that may occur after school hours or on weekends, with advance notice. Coaching opportunities may be available.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • The candidate must be a practicing Roman Catholic.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in theology, religious studies, education, or a related field is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching religion courses and/or organizing community service opportunities.
  • Openness to concept-based and inquiry-driven learning approaches, along with a willingness to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Experience in an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, particularly with the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or Diploma Programme (DP), is preferred.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check, Child Protective Services screening, and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Employment History Review.
  • Work environment
  • All faculty may be required to perform their duties from home (in the event of remote learning) and/or on campus. In either setting, faculty are expected to maintain a professional and collaborative work environment.
  • While performing the duties of this position, faculty are regularly required to communicate verbally and listen effectively. Although this role is primarily based in a desk, office, and classroom setting, it can also involve periods of physical activity. The position requires sitting and standing for extended periods, as well as occasional walking, including the use of stairs, and the moving or rearranging of items.

Compensation and Benefits

Annual salary ranges from $45,000 to $65,000, based on education and experience. Candidates with additional experience, qualifications, or the ability to assume additional responsibilities may be offered a salary outside of the stated range. A comprehensive benefits package includes tuition remission at Mercy High School for dependent daughters and at Loyola University Maryland for employees and their dependents, subject to eligibility requirements and years of full-time service.
