Responsible for assisting classroom teachers in the care and development of children enrolled in an early childhood education center as well as maintenance of the classroom. Hours vary based on an as-needed basis. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Assists in planning and teaching activities within the YWCA’s developmentally appropriate framework to encourage the advancement of children’s cognitive, social/emotional, physical and creative skills. Recognizes health and safety hazards and protects children from harm. Protects the physical care and nurtures children in a clean, safe teaching environment that supports their needs for physical movement, sensory stimulation, fresh air, rest, and nourishment. Encourages the positive self image of children through active listening, responding and encouraging independence while giving verbal and non-verbal reinforcement. Uses positive, non-punitive discipline techniques. Guides children in controlling their behavior by using positive, appropriate approaches. Cleans and maintains the classroom and equipment on a regular basis. Manages budget expenditures through the proper care and use of materials and equipment. Helps complete timely, accurate reporting that can include but is not limited to attendance and program reports, daily meal counts, developmental records of each child, timesheets, leave requests, disbursement receipts and incident reports. Adapts and responds to changing and challenging conditions in ways that enhances program quality. Develops and maintains cooperative, supportive relationships with center, staff, children and their families. Attends and participates in YWCA in-house staff training.
High diploma or GED. DCF Child Care 45 hours required; CDA certificate from a community college or vocational technical school a plus. One year of experience working with infants and/or toddlers in a child care facility preferred, 15 hours of continuing education each year thereafter; however, the YWCA reserves the right to increase hours of training annually. Red Cross First Aid CPR certificate; Required to have fingerprint and background check, and pass drug test.
