We are looking for you! The Even Start Teaching Assistants are part of the Even Start Program in the Kenosha Unified School District. No prior teaching experience is required. This position is a great fit for students interested in a career working with children and families across a variety of settings. This job is open to all majors and will be a particularly good fit if you're majoring in education, sociology, psychology, or communication. The Even Start Program is seeking students who can work throughout the 2026-2027 school year. You must have federal work-study in order to be eligible for this role. Job Duties Assist with a variety of learning activities and projects that prepare preschool children for Kindergarten and help them gain English language skills. This includes helping prepare materials and assisting students and staff with activities. Work collaboratively in a team setting with other Even Start Program staff to help families (parents and preschool children) strengthen their English skills. Suggestions or ideas for creative lessons or activities for preschool children to complete are optional but welcome! Hours and Compensation The program runs Monday-Thursday during the school year between 8:30 -11:30 a.m. and 12:15-2:15 p.m. The average number of hours per week is 10-20. If you have schedule conflicts during this time but are still interested in the position, please apply and discuss flexibility options with the supervisor. Candidates should plan to commit to the role for the full Fall or Spring semester. Even Start Child Care workers are paid $12.44/hour.

The program includes: English as a second language education provides parents/guardians and/or adults with basic and advanced English skills. Early childhood education provides learning opportunities for children from birth to age 5. Family literacy programs work in the areas of physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development and emphasize the importance of a child’s success in school. Parent education provides parents/guardians with a wide variety of learning topics, including parenting strategies, how to be advocates and role models for their children and strategies to support their children’s learning. Interactive literacy activities provide a tie to increase and facilitate meaningful parent-child interactions focused primarily on language and literacy development in a high-quality environment where they can learn and play together. Home visits provide a means for delivering literacy instruction in a familiar setting and for emphasizing that parents/guardians are the child’s first and most important teacher. Family engagement activities provide families with hands-on educational experiences throughout the community.
