About the role

The School Registered Nurse provides direct medical care and health assessments for students with complex medical needs. They collaborate with clinical teams and families to implement Individualized Education Plans and maintain accurate health records.

JOB SUMMARY Purpose

The School Registered Nurse provides direct care to students with complex medical needs during the school day. This includes health assessments, treatments, and accurate documentation. The nurse works closely with the Director of Education, staff, families, and healthcare providers to ensure students receive safe, consistent, and compassionate care, following school policies and state health and education regulations. RESPONSIBLITIES Provide direct health services to students based on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Conduct regular health assessments, including quarterly and annual reviews, to evaluate each student's medical and developmental status. Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Individual Program Plan (IPPs) in collaboration with clinical teams. Deliver routine and emergency care throughout the school day, including medications, tube feedings, and treatments as prescribed. Monitor medically fragile students during transportation and throughout the day. Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, daily shift reports, and electronic health logs. Respond quickly and calmly to medical emergencies and changes in student health status. Inform physicians or nurse practitioners of significant health concerns or changes. Train and educate staff on student-specific care needs, medication administration, and other health-related topics. Support smooth student admissions, transfers, and discharges by reviewing medical history and updating care plans. Work closely with families, case managers, and healthcare providers to ensure coordination of care. Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development of educational and medical goals. Promote a healthy school environment by maintaining safe and clean medical spaces and enforcing infection control practices. Serve as a liaison between home, school, and outside medical or community agencies. Perform other nursing-related duties as assigned by the Director of Education or school leadership team.

Qualifications

Associate Degree in Nursing (required); Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (preferred). Active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license (required). Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification from the American Heart Association (required). Must be listed on the Illinois Health Care Worker Registry. 1-5 years of pediatric, special education, or medically fragile student care experience preferred. Strong clinical, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 lbs as needed. Must pass criminal background check and drug screening. Experience working with students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is a plus. Must be flexible, detail-oriented, and able to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team. SCHEDULE Full-time position: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Follows the school calendar, including scheduled breaks and holidays. May be required to work select school holidays or non-student attendance days based on operational needs. Any schedule changes or holiday shift adjustments must be approved by the Director of Education. Missed holiday shifts may require make-up on another designated school holiday. Requirements

Candidates must hold an Associate Degree in Nursing, an active Illinois RN license, and BLS/CPR certification. Experience in pediatric or special education care is preferred, along with the ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
