  • Category: EducationCypress Hills Local Development Corporation(CHLDC) has an opening for one (1) part-time GED Instructor the Career and Education Programs’ YouthBuild IGNITE. The GED Teacher will work directly with CHLDC’s. We are seeking an energetic and dedicated GED Instructor to inspire adult learners in achieving their General Education Development (GED) credentials. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact by guiding students through their educational journey, utilizing innovative learning technology, and fostering a supportive classroom environment. The ideal candidate will bring passion for adult education, strong instructional skills, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

  • Duties: Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans in accordance with the GED test standards. Teach core subjects (Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Reasoning through Language Art [RLA]) in a manner that accommodates different learning styles and levels. Assess student needs and tailor instruction to meet individual academic goals and address learning gaps. Integrate real-world applications and problem-solving into lessons to make content relevant and relatable for students. Provide personalized academic guidance and one-on-one tutoring to students struggling with specific content. Act as a mentor, offering encouragement and strategies for overcoming personal and academic obstacles. Develop relationships with students to foster trust and motivation, addressing barriers such as attendance, behavior, and life challenges. Conduct regular assessments to monitor student progress and identify areas of improvement. Prepare students for the GED Readiness Test and ultimately the official GED exam. Maintain accurate records of student performance and adapt lesson plans based on data. Create a safe, respectful, and disciplined classroom environment. Promote a culture of respect, inclusion, and positive reinforcement among students. Manage classroom behavior and ensure a conducive learning environment. Work closely with YouthBuild program staff and Social Worker to provide holistic support for students. Communicate regularly with the YouthBuild Director and Assistant Director regarding student progress, attendance, challenges, and needs. Participate in agency meetings, committees, professional development, and community engagement activities, demonstrating a commitment to youth development, leadership development, equity, continuous improvement, and community building. Maintain compliance with agency policies, confidentiality standards, safety procedures, contractual obligations, documentation requirements, and applicable regulations while performing other duties as assigned. Attend staff meetings and professional development workshops as required. Demonstrate commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education, or a related field required . Teaching certification preferred, with a focus on adult education or secondary education, but not required. Experience teaching at-risk youth or in a non-traditional educational setting preferred. Clear understanding of the GED exam structure and requirements. Excellent communication, classroom management, and motivational skills. Ability to build rapport and trust with students from diverse backgrounds. Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping youth achieve their educational goals.

  • Environment: This position works in office and classroom settings as well as significant community engagement and worksite locations. This role routinely involves travel and uses a full range of office equipment such as computers, cellphones, photocopiers, and standard equipment such as scissors and tape dispensers.

  • Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to efficiently and independently travel throughout the 5 boroughs using public transportation.

  • Conditions: Position is part-time; 20 hours per week (8:30am to 1:00pm). Position is based in a classroom setting and candidate must be able to work fully in-person. Must be able to work with from morning into afternoon to accommodate the needs of students.

Supervision

Reports directly to the YouthBuild IGNITE Assistant Director.
