Job Description

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Instructor is responsible for the proper administration of the Virginia-certified high school EMT course according to Virginia Department of Education and Virginia Department of Health Office of EMS guidelines.

Significant responsibilities

Teaching: Instructs primarily in the high school setting. Engages in teaching activities according to expertise in the classroom, laboratory and/or clinical setting. Participates in the development, evaluation and modification of curriculum as appropriate to meet professional and accreditation standards. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.

Advising

Acts as academic advisor for students in high school class. Maintains current and accurate advising files and records.

Professional, University and Community Service

Functions and participates as part of the professional, University and local communities by serving and providing leadership on committees and other workgroups.

Administration

Administers, in collaboration with the Program Director, the high-school EMT program. Maintains open communication with University and school administration. Performs other administrative duties as assigned.

Professional Competence

Maintains professional competence through continuing education and/or professional practice. Participates in training deemed necessary by the University and school administration.

Collaboration

Participates in appropriate committees, community service activities, and instructional updates as deemed necessary by the University and school administration.

Job scope

  • A non-supervisory position.
  • Work is performed in several environments: office, classroom, skills laboratory, and clinical facilities where exposure to communicable diseases may be a moderate risk. Maintains contact with students and clinical facility personnel. Communicates regularly with Program Director and other faculty to coordinate student learning experiences.

Required Qualifications • Education

  • Graduate of a nationally accredited paramedic program.
  • Experience: 3 years of experience as an EMS provider
  • Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Virginia EMT-Intermediate and certification as a Virginia EMS Education Coordinator; credential preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Good understanding of educational principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to demonstrate psychomotor skills effectively while explaining steps to learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as an EMS provider with instructional experience at the ALS level
  • Licensure, certification, and/or registration as a Paramedic
  • Additional instructor credentials as appropriate
