Community English Language Learning Support - SESLWS

Grinnell College·Grinnell, Iowa

Part Time·On Site·0-2 yrs·Posted 8 days ago
Practice for this role

About the role

The student will facilitate weekly conversational English practice sessions for immigrant community members and help coordinate student volunteers. They will also be responsible for developing curriculum, identifying support tools, and conducting outreach for the program.

The Service Leadership Work Study Program (SLWS) is a community engagement program that provides students with an on-campus employment opportunity where they work with local community organizations.

By working closely with local community organizations, students in the program get a sustained opportunity to engage with local issues while also interacting with a broad range of community members.

The program also provides a peer learning community that supplements the work done by the students at their various work-sites and that provides opportunities for shared learning and collaboration.

The positions in the program, which fall under the Student Union contract and pay the standard campus wage, can also fulfill federal work-study requirements.

This position, which is for 6-8 hours per week, will support a community English Language Learning Program.

Position Summary

We are looking for two SLWS students to help support community-based English Language programming for immigrant community members, mainly in the form of adult English practice sessions that are offered on a weekly basis (although we are looking to expand those sessions to twice a week + provide more support for immigrant children from our local schools). These practice sessions are largely informal and focused on providing conversational support to help build English proficiency by supplementing more formal instruction provided by an ongoing ELL program for adults offered through Iowa Valley Community College.

Duties

  • Build curriculum + identify tools for conversational English practice support
  • Facilitate English practice sessions on a weekly basis
  • Help coordinate student volunteers + do outreach
  • Identify other areas for ELL support

Requirements

  • Committed to supporting immigrant community members
  • Fluent in Spanish or French
  • Willing and able to work flexible hours
  • Comfort with working independently
  • No curricular or teaching experience required

Applicants for the position will need to provide a cover letter and resume. The cover letter should be addressed to Ryan Solomon, Director of Civic Education at Grinnell College.

Applications for these positions close on Friday August 28th. Please note that applications will be considered on a rolling basis, as they are submitted, so you are encouraged to get your applications in before the closing date.

Market context

Iowa classroom teacher demand remains steady

In Iowa, classroom teacher roles typically see steady demand, especially for candidates with early childhood experience and current CPR/First Aid credentials. These positions can be competitive because employers often look for strong communication, organization, and the ability to handle physically active classroom duties, alongside benefits such as health, dental, vision, paid holidays, and paid time off. Review the physical requirements and certification details carefully before applying; this platform’s AI-summarized job requirements and benefits help save time by condensing the original posting.
