The student will facilitate Girl Power Math Club sessions for elementary girls and conduct research and outreach to support program growth. Responsibilities also include creating feedback forms and recruiting volunteers to expand the program's reach.
The Service Leadership Work Study Program (SLWS) is a community engagement program that provides students with an on-campus employment opportunity where they work with local community organizations.
By working closely with local community organizations, students in the program get a sustained opportunity to engage with local issues while also interacting with a broad range of community members.
The program also provides a peer learning community that supplements the work done by the students at their various work-sites and that provides opportunities for shared learning and collaboration.
The positions in the program, which fall under the Student Union contract and pay the standard campus wage, can also fulfill federal work-study requirements.
This position, which is for 5 hours per week, will support the Girl Power Math Club.
S.H.E. Counts mission is to support, help, and empower women and girls in Poweshiek County and the core program, the Girl Power Math Club, which is run out of Grinnell Middle School, lives out this mission by empowering 3-4th grade girls to gain confidence in math and begin a journey of life-long learning. Created in 2016 to increase the number of girls participating in advanced mathematics in middle and high school, the main objective of Math Club is to engage elementary girls in mathematics using math games, puzzles, problem solving, computer programming, art and storytelling.
The student in the position would help with facilitating Math Club sessions, as well as doing prep work for sessions. Math Club sessions happen on Wednesdays from 2:30-5:00 p.m from October 7th - December 16th, so the student in the position would need to be available at those days and times. Additional research and outreach work would happen weekly at a time chosen by the student. If you love math and working with kids, this would be a great position for you.
