Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic Adult Education GED/pre-GED Preparation Instructor to join our team and support adult learners in enhancing their basic academic skills in Reading, Language Arts, Writing, Social Studies fundamentals, and Science fundamentals. The ideal candidate will work with adult learners in a rolling enrollment environment, preparing students to move on to our GED Preparation Course and/or pass the GED test, thereby enabling students to successfully transition to post-secondary education, advanced training, the military, or employment. Workplace preparation is an area of emphasis. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the instructor will focus on providing foundational reading and writing instruction, fostering student engagement, and ensuring all learners ultimately demonstrate the necessary academic requirements for GED completion and employment. This may be an ideal part-time position for a retired or active special educator, middle/elementary/secondary level teacher, or reading specialist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivery: Provide engaging and effective academic instruction in Reading, Language Arts, and Writing as well as fundamental science / social studies concepts), targeting the skills necessary for successful completion of the GED exam (Reading and Writing sections).
  • Curriculum
  • Development: Develop and implement lesson plans that address the diverse learning needs of adult learners, ensuring alignment with GED test requirements and workforce development goals.
  • Assessment &
  • Evaluation: Conduct academic assessments to evaluate student progress, identify areas for improvement, and track outcomes. Use assessments to adjust teaching strategies and improve learner success – in a rolling enrollment setting.
  • Student
  • Support: Offer supplemental instruction and tutoring as needed to help learners gain the skills necessary for post-GED transitions to post-secondary education, advanced training, military, or employment.
  • Classroom
  • Management: Maintain a positive, respectful, and productive classroom environment. Foster a supportive atmosphere that encourages adult learners from diverse backgrounds to engage, grow, and succeed.
  • Tracking and
  • Reporting: Track and monitor student attendance, performance, and progress. Maintain accurate records of student participation and achievements. Submit timely reports to the Assistant Director as needed.
  • Technology
  • Integration: Utilize internet-based programs, software, and distance learning services to supplement instruction and track student outcomes.
  • Workforce
  • Preparation:
  • Incorporate workplace skills as an important vehicle for daily instruction, taking advantage of opportunities and available resources to contextualize instruction, such as: resume, cover letter, and professional email writing.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of fundamental reading, language arts, and writing principles.
  • Ability to revise and implement a curriculum that meets the needs of diverse learners.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a classroom of students with varying academic levels.
  • Proficiency with technology and educational software.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum three years’ experience in education; ability to identify learning styles and create a positive learning environment; ability to work independently to meet program goals; able to work individually in a one-to-one setting as necessary; previous experience working with at risk, LD population, aged 16 to 24. RI Teacher Certification a plus.
