Job Summary

Tri-County seeks a dedicated and passionate Part-Time Adult Education Instructor to join our team. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the teacher will provide academic instruction to adult learners (to include 16 and 17 year olds pursuing alternative learning plans). The primary focus is on numeracy skills and mathematical content knowledge designed to prepare students for their next levels of study: our GED preparation course, the GED test, and ultimately for successful transition into post-secondary education, advanced training, military service, or employment. Classes are in person, with rolling enrollment. We provide supplemental asynchronous & distance learning opportunities to Adult Learners, as well.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging and effective academic numeracy instruction, targeting the skills necessary to prepare for, and successfully complete, the standard GED preparation course and the Mathematical Reasoning section of the GED exam.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that address the diverse learning needs of adult learners, ensuring alignment with GED test requirements and workforce development goals.
  • Conduct academic assessments to evaluate skills, student progress, and track outcomes. Use assessments to adjust teaching strategies and improve learner success.
  • Offer supplemental instruction and tutoring as needed to help learners gain the skills necessary for post-GED transitions to post-secondary education, advanced training, military, or employment.
  • Maintain a positive, respectful, and productive classroom environment. Foster a supportive atmosphere that encourages adult learners from diverse backgrounds to engage, grow, and succeed.
  • Track and monitor student attendance, performance, progress, and outcomes. Maintain accurate records of student participation and achievements. Submit timely reports to the Assistant Director as needed.
  • Utilize internet-based programs, software, and distance learning services to supplement instruction and track student outcomes.
  • Modify instruction to accommodate students with varying academic levels and backgrounds.
  • Monitor student hours and progress, ensuring that all learners are on track to meet academic goals.
  • Utilize confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Work with students at varying academic levels, in a cohort based, or 1:1 setting.
  • Maintain an organized,needs-driven classroom environment.
  • Demonstrate strong classroom management skills to support a diverse range of learners with varying academic capabilities – particularly those who may initially struggle with basic math skills and concepts.
  • Identify learning styles to create a learning environment that helps meet program goals and an important aspect of our mission - helping community members to help themselves.
  • Other reasonable duties and tasks as assigned by the assistant director or director.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of middle and high school level mathematics.
  • Ability to further develop and implement curriculum that meets the needs of diverse learners.
  • Ability to create a respectful, inclusive learning environment.
  • Previous experience teaching or tutoring adult learners in the following areas: Mathematic Reasoning; Basic Mathematics; Geometry; Algebra; Graphs and Functions, and Numeracy.
  • Strong understanding of the GED exam requirements, particularly the Mathematics Reasoning portion.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a classroom of students with varying academic levels.
  • Proficiency with technology and educational software.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently to meet program goals.

  • A passion for adult education, lifelong learning, and for truly making a difference in the lives of program participants.
  • Ability to incorporate workplace skills as an important vehicle for daily mathematics instruction - taking advantage of opportunities and available resources to contextualize mathematics via financial literacy; budgeting; saving money to achieve future goals, such as renting an apartment, owning a home, and/or leasing a car, as examples.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; Minimum three years of experience in education; Ability to address the needs of students in a rolling enrollment environment; Previous experience working with at risk, LD population, aged 16 to 24, and beyond; Some proficiency in using online programs and software for instruction and tracking student progress; RI Teacher Certification preferred, but not necessarily required.
