About the role

Instructors deliver structured swim lessons focused on water safety, skill progression, and confidence-building for participants of varying ages. They are also responsible for maintaining a safe, inclusive environment and communicating effectively with participants and their families.

Swim Instructors with Butler Recreation & Wellness Aquatics provide high-quality, developmentally appropriate swim instruction to participants of varying ages and skill levels. Instructors are responsible for delivering structured lessons focused on water safety, skill progression, and confidence-building while maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment. Swim Instructors serve as positive role models, communicate effectively with participants and families, and support the overall success of the Aquatics program.

Work Schedule: Flexible, primarily weekday evenings

Position Responsibilities

  • Instruct individual or group swim lessons using SAI Swim School and Stroke School curriculum
  • Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment
  • Provide clear instruction, encouragement, and feedback to participants
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians about student progress
  • Prepare class materials and maintain daily lesson records
  • Always monitor participants’ safety and respond appropriately in emergency situations
  • Collaborate with aquatic staff and leadership team to improve program quality

Required Qualifications

  • Current Starfish Swimming Instructor (SSI) certification, or willingness to obtain certification prior to employment through a Butler University-provided course
  • Strong swimming ability and comfort in deep and shallow water
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children and guardians

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
  • Previous experience teaching swim lessons
  • Experience working with youth, families, or diverse ability levels
  • Competitive swimming or aquatic instruction background
