About the role

The Safety Instructor is responsible for delivering American Red Cross certification courses, including First Aid, CPR, and AED, to campus participants. They also manage course documentation, maintain training equipment, and ensure compliance with university safety and risk management standards.

The Safety Instructor is a employee responsible for delivering American Red Cross safety-related certification courses on behalf of Butler University Recreation & Wellness. This position primarily instructs First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace, with potential to support additional American Red Cross safety programs as approved. Safety Instructors serve as educators, facilitators, and ambassadors of Butler RecWell’s commitment to campus safety, risk reduction, and emergency preparedness. This role requires strong communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to confidently instruct adult learners in both classroom and blended-learning environments.

Work Schedule: Flexible schedule primarily weekend/evening certification classes ranging from 2 – 6 hours

Position Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Facilitation
  • Deliver American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace courses in accordance with ARC curriculum standards and Butler RecWell expectations.
  • Facilitate engaging, inclusive, and professional learning environments for participants from campus departments, student organizations, and external partners as applicable.
  • Lead skills practice sessions, scenario-based learning, and assessments to ensure participant competency.
  • Adapt instructional style to meet diverse learning needs while maintaining curriculum fidelity.
  • Safety & Risk Management
  • Model proper safety behaviors, emergency response techniques, and professional conduct at all times.
  • Ensure all course activities are conducted in a safe manner and in compliance with university risk management standards.
  • Respond appropriately to participant questions related to emergency response, injury prevention, and workplace safety within the scope of certification training.
  • Administrative & Program Support
  • Accurately complete course documentation, attendance records, and certification paperwork in alignment with American Red Cross and Butler RecWell procedures.
  • Maintain required instructional materials, equipment, and training supplies before and after courses.
  • Communicate proactively with Aquatics & Safety professional staff regarding scheduling, course needs, or instructional concerns.
  • Administrative & Program Support
  • Accurately complete course documentation, attendance records, and certification paperwork in alignment with American Red Cross and Butler RecWell procedures.
  • Maintain required instructional materials, equipment, and training supplies before and after courses.
  • Communicate proactively with Aquatics & Safety professional staff regarding scheduling, course needs, or instructional concerns.
  • Professionalism & Representation
  • Serve as a representative of Butler University RecWell and the Aquatics & Safety program when interacting with participants and campus partners.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling participant information and certification records.
  • Uphold Butler University policies, RecWell standards, and student employee expectations.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Current American Red Cross Instructor certification for First Aid/CPR/AED (or ability to obtain prior to instructing).
  • Current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED provider-level certification.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort speaking in front of groups.
  • Ability to work independently while following established curriculum and protocols.
  • Reliability, professionalism, and strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience teaching, training, or facilitating group instruction.
  • Experience working in recreation, aquatics, healthcare, education, or safety-related fields.
  • Additional American Red Cross Instructor certifications (e.g., CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Lifeguarding, or other safety programs).
  • Prior experience working with adult learners or workplace training programs.
  • Other Expectations

Requirements
