About the role

Develop and facilitate youth-focused, hands-on lesson plans while building positive relationships with students. Manage student behavior using restorative practices and assist with daily afterschool tasks like snack distribution and attendance.

OVERVIEW (University of St. Thomas- MN Students ONLY)**APPLICANTS FOR THIS POSITION MUST QUALIFY FOR FEDERAL OR STATE WORK STUDY*

This position is off-campus and student employees must provide their own transportation to the site. JOB TITLE: Afterschool Teacher/Youth Worker PAY RATE: $18-20.00/hour (depends on role & experience) Shifts: After School program hours vary by school site, but they typically begin between 2:00-3:00pm and end between 5:00-6:00pm, Monday-Thursday; we do not have afterschool activities on Fridays. Afterschool teachers/youth workers need to commit to working the same day(s) per week during the afterschoolperiod (e.g. every Monday) for an entire semester. Afterschool teachers/youth workers typically work 6-12 hours/week, though more or fewer hours can be available depending on your role & site needs. LOCATION(S): All work occurs at a Minneapolis Public School, and applicants will need to be able to transport themselves to/from that location via public transit, bike, or car. Program Description Minneapolis Community Education (MCE), a program of the Minneapolis Public Schools, delivers a wide range of high-quality enrichment learning opportunities during out of school time (afterschool, release days, and summer). Through small class sizes, youth are able to develop strong peer and adult relationships as they foster new skills in interest areas together. After School Teachers/youth workers partner with youth to facilitate hands-on, creative, and fun lessons. Afterschool teachers/youth workers teach/assist in classes such as chess, sports, arts & crafts, leadership, biking, STEM, digital design, theater, reading, writing, math and/or specialized enrichment class setting. They may also help distribute snack, take attendance, facilitate dismissal procedures, along with other afterschool tasks. Job Duties

Arrive on-time and ready to work when expected.

Develop & facilitate lesson plans that are youth-focused, hands-on and skill-building.

As a role model, help youth build a positive attitude toward learning.

Develop positive relationships with a small group of students through engaging activities.

With support, manage student behavior using restorative practices while following Community Education behavior guidelines.

Participate in quality programming trainings and observation process (YPQA).

Keep rooms and supplies organized and clean.

Attend staff meetings/trainings.

Communicate with Community Education Coordinator regularly about student and class needs.

Assist Community Ed Coordinator with additional tasks of afterschool programming.

Qualifications

  • Experience/Education Requirements University of St. Thomas Student
  • Experience working with school aged youth in enrichment and/or educational settings (e.g. summer camp, after school, classrooms, faith communities, personal life)
  • Ability to communicate professionally with people of all ages
  • Ability to recognize and respond effectively in emergencies

Requirements

Applicants must be current University of St. Thomas students who qualify for federal or state work study. Candidates should have experience working with school-aged youth in educational or enrichment settings.
