About the role

Academic Coaches lead math and social-emotional learning lessons for middle school students while providing one-on-one mentorship. They are responsible for classroom management, tracking student progress, and participating in professional development within a cohort model.

This position is off-campus and student employees must provide their own transportation to the site. JOB TITLE: Academic Coach at Aces PAY RATE: $19-$25 per hour; MN licensed educators qualify for $23-$28 per hour REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator Shifts: Part-time, approximately 14-20 hours per week depending on site placement and availability Hours:

Morning (AM: Monday – Friday 7am – 9:30am) and/or Afternoon (PM: Monday – Thursday 2pm – 5:30pm) o Note- Afternoon hours vary by site placement

2 hours of lesson planning a week

3-hour training once a month

Optional- Field Trip/Youth experience opportunities LOCATION(S): Minneapolis and Saint Paul About ACES ACES (Athletes Committed to Educating Students) is an innovative out-of-school time program that brings math and social-emotional learning to life for students. Our mission is to empower youth and expand opportunity through engaging, inclusive, and accessible learning eperiences. ACES’s programming consists of three primary, synergetic components: group classroom sessions, one-on-one mentorship, and unique experiential learning opportunities. Our unique, project based curriculum engages students through sports-themed, real-world applications. ACES partners with mission-aligned organizations and schools, as well as Minnesota’s professional sports teams, to deliver transformational programming for hundreds of students every year. Position Description Academic Coaches are ACES’s most powerful agents of change, engaging directly with students to advance education equity and prepare young learners for success in school, career, and community. Academic Coaches use ACES’s unique, hands-on curriculum to cultivate math skill and social-emotional development for a classroom of 10-15 middle school age students. Academic Coaches also provide one-on-one mentorship and academic support, building strong relationships with students and their families. This role will report to a Program Coordinator who will support their growth, development, and impact with students. Academic Coaches are part of a cohort. The cohort model fosters a collaborative and supportive environment for Academic Coaches to engage in professional development opportunities, share knowledge, build community, and enhance their skills. With their cohort group, Academic Coaches will attend and participate in initial trainings, monthly full-cohort professional development provided by internal and external trainers, and team-building events together with their peers.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching and Classroom Management o Plan and lead engaging math and social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons using ACES’s hands-on curriculum o Provide one-on-one and small group academic support for 4th-8th grade students o Seek out and actively develop positive relationships with each student in the ACES classroom o Independently manage the ACES classroom of 10-15 students by establishing and maintaining behavior expectations and routines and cultivating a positive classroom environment
  • Lesson Planning and Evaluation o Develop lesson adaptations and engagement strategies to meet students’ individual strengths and needs o Complete administrative tasks including tracking attendance and student progress and provide input for student and family engagement, and curriculum development o Record data and provide input for student and family engagement, and curriculum development o Contribute to ACES’s growth by giving feedback and participating in ACES’s evaluation methods
  • Training and Other Events o Attend monthly staff trainings and participate meaningfully o Participate in team-building events and other occasional ACES events o Chaperone and support engagement and positive behavior on occasional field trips
  • Other o Work collaboratively with Program Coordinator and Academic Coaches o Participate in check-ins with Program Coordinator o Adhere to program schedule, policies, and structure o Possibly sub at other ACES’s sites if needed and available o Embody ACES’s values: youth-centeredness, equity, belonging, collaboration, and growth o Complete various tasks and manage miscellaneous projects as needed SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Follow these recommendations to submit a strong application:

This position is an impactful growth and leadership experience for aspiring educators and those in the early stages of a teaching or youthwork career. The Academic Coach position can also fulfill college or graduate school internship requirements.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to relate to and develop positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
  • Embodiment of ACES’s values: youth-centeredness, equity, belonging, collaboration, and growth.
  • Commitment to ACES’s mission to reduce the academic opportunity gap and prepare students to succeed
  • Ability to work regular program hours and occasional extended hours, including evenings and weekends Desired Skills & Experience
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, Somali, or Hmong
  • Experience working with youth
  • Experience in teaching, lesson planning, or tutoring, especially in math
  • Experience working in underserved and historically marginalized communities
  • Current Minnesota teaching license or desire to pursue one

Requirements

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and currently enrolled as University of St. Thomas students who qualify for federal or state work study. Applicants should have experience working with youth and a commitment to educational equity.
