About the role

The LACE Aide provides classroom support by assisting students with activities, maintaining focus, and reinforcing instructions under the direction of the instructor. They also help students develop social and organizational skills while ensuring a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Sussex County Community College is currently seeking qualified candidates for part time Aides in our LACE program The LACE Aide provides classroom support to students participating in the Learning at College Experience (LACE) program at Sussex County Community College. Under the direction of the LACE instructor/program staff, the Aide assists students with participation in classroom activities and supports an inclusive, positive, and productive learning environment.

The LACE Aide provides appropriate prompting, encouragement, and assistance to students while promoting independence and self-advocacy. The position does not replace the instructor's role or provide instruction independently but works collaboratively with the instructor to support student engagement and participation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist the LACE instructor in supporting students during scheduled classroom activities.

Provide students with appropriate prompts, reminders, encouragement, and assistance to participate in classroom activities.

Help students understand and follow classroom expectations and routines.

Assist students with staying focused and engaged during lessons and activities.

Encourage students to complete tasks independently and provide assistance when needed.

Support students in developing appropriate classroom communication, social, and organizational skills.

Assist with classroom materials, activities, and setup/cleanup as directed by the instructor.

Reinforce instructions and concepts provided by the instructor.

Observe student participation and communicate relevant observations or concerns to the LACE instructor or program coordinator.

Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and student confidentiality.

Follow all College policies and procedures, including those related to student safety and confidentiality.

Attend required training or meetings as assigned.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

The LACE Aide works primarily in a classroom setting and is scheduled for approximately three (3) hours per week during the LACE program's scheduled class time on Wednesday evenings 4:00pm – 7:00pm. The position requires regular interaction with students and may require standing, walking, sitting, and assisting with classroom activities and materials.

The LACE Aide provides support under the direction of the LACE instructor and is not responsible for independently teaching the course, developing curriculum, grading, or providing personal care services to students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working with students, individuals with disabilities, or in an educational setting preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work patiently and respectfully with students with varying abilities and support needs.
  • Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively with the LACE instructor and program staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
