About the role

The Recovery Center Teacher facilitates recovery and wellness content in a classroom setting for individuals with mental health conditions. Responsibilities include developing class materials, engaging with students to support their recovery goals, and attending staff meetings.

Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is one of the country’s leading schools of health and rehabilitation sciences. Home to more than 1,300 undergraduate and 600+ graduate students, Sargent College combines outstanding faculty and cutting-edge research to provide superb education and clinical experiences. The college has more than 25 on-campus research facilities, clinical centers, and labs. It offers top-ranked degree programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, language and hearing sciences, health science, human physiology, behavior and health, and nutrition.

The Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, situated within Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Science, has been devoted to improving the lives of individuals with psychiatric conditions for over 40 years. Our Research, Training, and Services divisions work to achieve this goal by researching and developing new interventions, by disseminating new advancements and programs to the field, and by providing programming that teaches critical skills to promote success in whatever goals our participants may have as students, workers, and citizens.

The Center’s Services division is currently inviting applicants for a Recovery Center Teacher position. These part-time positions teach recovery and wellness content to persons with serious mental health conditions in a classroom setting. Key skills for this position include strong interpersonal skills and ability to foster a supportive environment for students in our program.

Essential functions

Engage with recovery education students to assist in their recovery, their education and building relationships.

Developing and preparing class materials.

Facilitating class content and exercises in class.

Attending staff meetings to ensure up-to-date knowledge of department practices and policies.

The Recovery Center Teacher will sustain and support a culture that celebrates the diversity of individuals and ideas, which values accountability, collaboration, and innovation. This is a part-time, in-person position (expected to be 6-15 hours per week depending on final class schedule). Tuesday/Thursday availability required.

Position Requirements

• 3 years of related experience, and 1 year should be directly related

Any one of the following

  • Certification as a peer specialist
  • Participation in peer facilitation courses
  • Past experience in the Center’s Recovery Education Program as a student
