The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.

ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families.

Position description

Position: ASL Department Assistant

Department: ASL Department

Supervisor: ASL Department Manager

Description: Per Diem, Not Benefits Eligible

Union Status: Non-Collective Bargaining (non-union)

Scope of duties

Under the supervision of the ASL Department supervisor or designee, the coordinator will assist and support the ASL Department and Central Office Front Reception Desk.

Primary duties

  • Schedules meetings, trainings, classes, and department events.
  • Maintain the ASL Department calendar and staff calendars.
  • Coordinate logistics for ASL Department events.
  • Organize and maintain the department’s Google Drive and Resource library.
  • Prepare training and assessment materials.
  • Schedule ASL assessments.
  • Create flyers and promotional materials.
  • Teach ASL 1 classes when needed.
  • Provide support during ASL programming at New Hire Orientation when needed.
  • Provide support and coverage for front reception desk when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum requirements
  • Fluent ASL user and knowledge of Deaf culture.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Experience with coordinating and scheduling events.
  • Experience with spreadsheets.

Salary and benefits

  • Group health insurance and other fringe benefits are available.
  • $1000 sign on bonus after one year of service for newly hired employees, not applicable for re-hires.
