Job description

The Day Camp Leader is responsible for guiding day campers throughout their camp experience and creating a learning environment for campers that teaches the YMCA four core values; respect, honesty, responsibility and caring. Ensuring the safety and success of the day campers in our program.

Salary Range

$21.00-$24.00/hour

Essential functions

  • Support campers in an all-day program at the YMCA Camp Campbell Expanded Opportunities Learning Program (ELOP).
  • Assist campers throughout their camp experience, including but not limited to: small group meetings, teambuilding, arts and crafts, guided exploration, sports, and skill based programming.
  • Identify and report any potential risks.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of participants by; know participant locations at all times, make participants aware of and enforce appropriate safety regulations and procedures, apply appropriate behavior management techniques, and maintain all program equipment and facilities.
  • Consistently demonstrate positive behavior management; teach and redirect rather than scolding or reprimanding; firmly and consistently enforce the rules.
  • Implement group activity plan; preparing materials, activities, and environments.
  • Consistently demonstrate positive interactions with all children; talk to them and treat them with dignity and respect. Help children to develop a positive self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with Day Camp Leadership.
  • Adhere to all processes, procedures, rules and regulations of the YMCA.
  • Work in a team environment and provide open communication regarding concerns/issues with children or co-workers.
  • Be prompt and dependable to work scheduled hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ages 18 years+
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A growth mindset and the desire to mentor youth to lead a healthy life.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid (or be certified within 30 days of hire).
  • Complete YMCA child abuse prevention within 30 days of hire.
  • Provide proof of negative tuberculosis test within the last calendar year (then valid for up to 4 years).
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as a group counselor or staff member in a camp setting.
  • ECE (Early Childhood Education) or CHAD (Child & Adolescent Development) Courses.
  • Interest in working using the principles of trauma informed care with underserved members of our community.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
