About the Role

We are seeking a patient, ASL-fluent Special Education tutor to work one-on-one with a student who is Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) and has intellectual disabilities. The student is non-verbal but communicates using approximately 60 signs and short 1–2 word phrases. The student thrives with consistency, structure, and strong one-on-one relationships, so building trust and maintaining a predictable routine will be key to supporting their learning and progress.

  • Responsibilities: Provide individualized tutoring in English and Math aligned with the student’s IEP goals. Support foundational learning goals such as alphabet identification, counting to 10, and increasing independent signing. Use visual supports, gestures, and ASL communication to facilitate understanding. Create a calm, structured learning environment that respects the student’s need for routine. Support engagement through interactive and hands-on learning activities. Manage occasional agitation with patience, consistency, and supportive redirection.

Qualifications

Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) Experience working with Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) students Extensive hands-on Special Education experience, particularly with students who have intellectual or developmental disabilities Patient, calm, and skilled at building trusting relationships with students who rely on structured routines Ability to use visual cues and adaptive teaching strategies
