  • FUNCTION: In alignment with YMCA of Indiana County’s strategic plan to become the leading provider of childcare across Indiana County, all employees in the licensed childcare program are responsible for nurturing the potential of every child through implementation of approved curriculum, adherence to state licensing and quality requirements, and providing exceptional care to children and families.

Responsibilities

Assist with implementing purposeful programming and curriculum within established guidelines; prepare in advance for each lesson/activity. Supervise children, classroom, and all activities, including ADA accommodations, under the guidance of a Group Supervisor. Follow all procedures and standards. Actively guide children in developmentally appropriate play and routines. Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child to provide feedback and create purposeful activities to meet individual and group needs. Provide positive descriptive feedback to prevent and redirect challenging behaviors. Cultivate positive relationships and maintain effective communication with parents; engage parents as volunteers and connect them to the YMCA. Maintain program site and equipment according to program standards. Ensure a safe, healthy environment and effectively enact safety/emergency procedures; practice infection control and proper handwashing. Maintain required program records. Accurately maintain required training to comply with licensing, program standards, and YMCA policies. Attend and participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training as required. Communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers to provide feedback for program improvement and report concerns. Report suspected abuse in accordance with PA Child Protective Services Law and YMCA policy. Perform other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work with participants in program or instructional settings (sitting, standing, kneeling, walking). Lift at least 35 pounds regularly and exert up to 50 pounds occasionally. Perform tasks including reaching above shoulders, bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping, crawling, crouching, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, hearing, visual acuity, and sitting on the floor depending on activities. Work on surfaces including cement, tile, carpet, mulch, wood, and rubberized floors. AUDITORY REQUIREMENTS: Understand and distinguish speech and sounds to communicate, answer phones, and respond to alarms/emergencies. VISUAL REQUIREMENTS: Good color, depth, and field of vision (with or without correction) to distinguish objects, detect, and follow moving objects. HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS/MATERIALS EXPOSURE: Frequent exposure to outdoor elements. Potential encounter with bodily fluids/blood. EFFECT ON END RESULT: Student progress and attainment of established goals. Growth in the licensed preschool program and increase in camp participation year over year. Qualifications Must be at least 18 years old and qualify according to Teacher’s Aide requirements per 55 PA Code 3270.34 Aide Qualifications. Strong communication skills, good judgment, and aptitude for working with others in a patient, professional manner reflecting YMCA character development values and mission. Skills in planning and managing classroom lessons, activities, behavior management, and Microsoft Office use are desirable. Required clearances at hire: FBI Fingerprint (Department of Human Services), State Police PATCH, Child Abuse, NSOR (National Sex Offender Registry). Other hire requirements: DHS required training (10 hours), Pediatric First Aid/CPR, Mandated Reporter, Disclosure Statement, Staff Health Assessment (<12 months), negative TB test documentation (<12 months).
