- Shift: VariableAPPLY BY WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2026 Sports Camp Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper at Camp Play Ball. Counselors are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out daily sports activities related to weekly themes that fulfill the mission of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina and our Summer Sports Camp. Counselors exemplify and foster our core values of honesty, caring, respect, responsibility and faith which promote healthy youth development through strengthening campers’ spirit, mind, and body.
Position Summary
Professional role models wanted! Be a part of #SuperSummer team this summer season. You will be tasked with helping kids have the best summer of their lives in a safe environment. In the process, you'll gain job skills, a fun work environment, and the personal satisfaction of knowing you are shaping the future. As a counselor in our Summer Sports Camp, you will help campers make new friends; keep them safe both physically and mentally; build positive relationships with their families; lead large and small group games and scrimmages; teach fundamental skills through drills, and character development; sing songs; encourage personal fitness, and lead devotions. Occasional extended and/or non-traditional hours and/or other duties may be required. Essential Functions Coordinates the site in accordance with YMCA guidelines, ensuring all sports curriculum and materials are prepared accordingly and accessible. Builds effective, authentic relationships with staff, students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Maintains records as required (i.e. site checklist, attendance, food service, staff & student forms, etc.). Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled. Selected candidates must be able to attend the Sports Camp Training in May. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes discipline, incident, and accident reports as necessary. Ensures that the site is kept organized and all supplies are put away daily. Reports damaged equipment. Qualifications Must be 16 years of age Working knowledge of rules for basketball, volleyball, flag football, soccer and / or baseball preferred Ability to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, patience and understanding, good decision making, and receive and follow instructions Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills Be able to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time (including outside and in the pool) Appreciate diversity and practice inclusion Ability to attend required training and be available for a variable schedule, usually between 7:45 am and 5:00 pm, as well as event coverage on select nights and weekends
