Job Description

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for managing a caseload of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans. The teacher will provide direct and indirect services as outlined in student plans, ensure compliance with all special education requirements, and collaborate with families, educators, and support staff to promote student success in an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities

Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in accordance with their IEPs and 504 Plans. Develop and deliver individualized and small-group instruction designed to meet students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Establish clear learning objectives for lessons and communicate expectations effectively to students. Utilize evidence-based special education strategies and instructional techniques to support the development of language, cognition, memory, sensory, and perceptual-motor skills. Adapt curriculum, instructional materials, and teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning needs and abilities. Instruct students using a variety of approaches, including multisensory techniques, phonics-based instruction, repetition, and differentiated learning strategies. Establish and maintain a positive, structured classroom environment consistent with the school's behavior management framework. Maintain accurate service logs, lesson plans, progress monitoring data, and all required special education documentation in accordance with federal, state, and school regulations. Serve as the case manager and primary point of contact for students on your caseload. Attend and facilitate IEP meetings and collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, related service providers, and other stakeholders. Prepare and distribute quarterly progress reports for students receiving special education services. Collaborate regularly with general education teachers and multidisciplinary team members to support student achievement and inclusion. Assist with the preparation and administration of standardized assessments as needed. Participate in professional development, staff meetings, curriculum planning, and other school-based initiatives to maintain professional competence and support school goals. Perform additional duties as assigned, including supervisory responsibilities and other school-related tasks.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Special Education preferred. Massachusetts Special Education Teacher Licensure or eligibility for licensure. SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Endorsement required. Strong knowledge of special education laws, regulations, IEP development, and best practices. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and colleagues. Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Commitment to maintaining high academic and behavioral expectations for all students.
