Job description

The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is currently seeking an Assistant Athletic Trainer to support the Sports Medicine program.

  • Assistant Athletic Trainers are typically assigned oversight of one primary sports program; however, they may serve in a supporting capacity for a secondary sports program.
  • They are responsible for assisting the Senior Associate AD for Sports Medicine in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral and rehabilitation of injuries/illnesses of student-athletes.
  • They may supervise part time athletic trainers, graduate assistants, or student workers.
  • They perform their work independently, under limited supervision.
  • Specific duties include, but are not limited to: Assist in the daily health care of student-athletes.
  • Record and maintain appropriate medical records for treatment given.
  • Interface with various internal and external personnel for referral purposes and information exchange.
  • Provide guidance to part time athletic trainers, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the Sports Medicine unit.
  • Assist in various teaching responsibilities and in clinical education, providing support in the administrative management of the Sports Medicine unit.
  • Medical coverage of men’s football, and/or other sports as needed.
  • Transport student-athletes to medical appointments.
  • Other miscellaneous job-related duties as deemed necessary by the Senior Associate AD for Sports Medicine.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of NCAA, ACC and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.
  • Demonstrates genuine concern and interest for the welfare of student-athletes.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate therapeutic requirements for student-athletes, and to fit and modify therapeutic and/or protective equipment.
  • Ability to function professionally in highly stressful situations and to provide clear information on an impromptu basis to individuals or groups of people.

  • Required Qualifications Education

    Bachelor's degree required.

    Experience

    Two years of certified athletic trainer experience in an NCAA institutional athletic environment.

    Licensure

    Eligibility for State Licensure as an Athletic Trainer. Certified Athletic Trainer per the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC). CPR/AED certifications. Valid driver's license and personal transportation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Education: Master's Degree. Preferred experience includes: 3+ years' experience working in a Division I-A institution. First Aid/CPR Instructor. Experience working in the supervision and education of student interns and graduate assistants. Experience providing Sports Medicine coverage for football and/or acute injuries Experience with performance technologies / movement assessments / post-operative rehabilitation Licensure: CES, PES, FMS, cupping, and/or Graston certifications preferred.

    About the Position

    Anticipated hiring range: $55,000-$60,000, dependent upon qualifications. This position will not consider candidates who require immigration sponsorship now or in the future. The job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease. This position is located on the UVA Grounds in Charlottesville, VA.
