Position Summary

St. Ann Center values the intrinsic worth of every person, and has as a goal that every person will achieve his/her maximum potential. The Assistant Teacher helps St. Ann achieve this goal by understanding and communicating the needs of children and their families by assuring the daily care that meets each child's spiritual, developmental, nutritional, and personal needs. Appropriate daily care of children occurs through communication with parents, and working effectively with the classroom Lead Teacher, other room staff, seniors and volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities

To be sensitive to children's daily and changing needs, as well as being able to remain calm and relaxed in a stressful situation. Take care of responsibilities such as, napping, feeding, diapering, toileting, as needed. Deal with children with warmth and affection. Respect children as individuals, be sensitive and respond to their individual needs and have age-appropriate expectations. Be aware of the health of the children and report to Lead Teacher any abnormalities. Acquire a thorough knowledge of what to do in an emergency situation. To work with the children in the classroom, both individually and in groups, using developmentally appropriate practices, programs, and curricula. Be knowledgeable and carry through with the Center's philosophy of developmentally appropriate child care. Give full attention to all children and activities with the classroom. Assist in providing developmentally appropriate play experiences for children and understand the "value of play" as a major way in which children learn. To communicate, orally and in written form, to all involved, including other staff members, Lead Teacher, Center Director, therapists etc., the needs of children and their families. Day-to-day communication with parents, including interpretation and follow through of Center philosophy and policies. Cooperate with other staff members as a team and engaging in problem solving techniques when personal or job-related issues begin to affect the care of the children. Be responsible for connecting with Lead Teacher, reading daily memos and notes, and other staff communications in a timely fashion. Complete all forms, logs and reports as required. To work with seniors and volunteers in the classroom in the execution of activities planned with the children so that their contribution is maximized. QualificationsEducation/Training: Have completed or be enrolled in a 44-hour, state-approved training course for Assistant Child Care Workers OR have satisfactorily completed one non-credit department approved course in early childhood education or completes that training within 6 months after assuming position OR satisfactorily completed one course for credit in early childhood education or its equivalent at an institution for higher education, or is enrolled in that course within 6 months of assuming position. Experience with children preferred. Completion of 10 hour approved Infant/Toddler course within 6 months of assuming a position with an Infant/Toddler classroom. Maintains in-service and continuing education requirements as mandated by State Licensing Regulations. Essential Qualifications: To be able to lift and hold young children, in particular infants and toddlers (up to approximately 25 pounds). To be able to stand and walk for long - periods of time, reach, and interact with children at their level (stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl). To provide a model of excellence and leadership as an educator with the Center and in the early childhood field. To be able to adjust for children's individual needs the daily needs that arise due to staffing issues. To be creative and flexible. Any other specified duties as requested by the Center Director. Must follow all Policies and Procedures of St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care This is a general outline of the essential functions of this position and shall not be construed as an all-inclusive description of all work requirements and responsibilities that may be inherent in this position.
