Provide direct orientation and mobility services to PreK-12 students, including conducting assessments and developing individualized education plans (IEPs). Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and parents to ensure safe travel routes and environmental modifications within the school.
Requires a bachelor's degree and COMS certification, with a preference for a graduate degree in Orientation & Mobility or Vision Studies. Candidates should have experience working with children with visual impairments in a school setting.
Develop, implement, and assess individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities. Deliver instruction tailored to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students. Collaborate with parents, educators, and specialists to ensure a comprehensive approach to student learning and support. Assess school campuses for travel safety Recommend environmental modifications Help plan safe travel routes around the school Monitor student progress and adapt instructional strategies to improve outcomes. Provide one-on-one or small group instruction Tailor lessons based on the student’s vision level, age, and mobility needs Adjust strategies for students with additional disabilities Maintain accurate records of student performance, behavior, and progress to inform ongoing instruction and planning. Create a welcoming, safe, and productive classroom environment that encourages positive behavior and learning. Provide guidance and support to classroom staff in implementing educational strategies for students with special needs. Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree in Orientation & Mobility, Vision Studies, or related field preferred COMS Certification (ACVREP) required or preferred 1+ years of experience in a school setting preferred Experience working with children with visual impairments Knowledge of orientation and mobility assessments and instruction Organizational and time management skills Proficient in use of technology Fingerprint background clearance Ability to collaborate with school staff and parents with a demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of tact and discretion in both internal and external communications Physical Requirements Working and playing with students requires that employees must be able to perform the necessary physical movement functions, as needed, such as lifting, sitting, walking, standing, crawling, and engaging with students in all physical locations and activities, while adhering to the duties outlined by the district.
