About the role

The Floating Substitute provides support across multiple childcare sites by covering teacher absences, breaks, and transitions for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. They are responsible for maintaining a safe, engaging environment and collaborating with staff to ensure smooth program operations.

This is a grant funded position.

Status: Full-time

Location

The position will be floating between all 5 child care sites with all ages and hour will vary based on needs.

Wage

$18 - $20 per hour

Position summary

The Floating Substitute provides support across all sites (Washington and Ozaukee County), classrooms and age groups (6 weeks to 5 year olds), stepping in as needed to maintain safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environments for children. This role is highly flexible, covering teacher absences, breaks, transitions, and assisting with daily routines.

The Float works collaboratively with classroom teachers and leadership to ensure continuity of care and smooth program operations.

Essential functions

1.

Supervise and engage children in age-appropriate activities.

2.

Provide classroom coverage during staff absences, breaks, or planning time.

3.

Support teachers with daily routines such as meals, rest time, outdoor play, and transitions.

4.

Adapt quickly to different classrooms and age groups (6 weeks to 5-year-olds).

5.

Follow all health, safety, and licensing regulations.

6.

Assist with classroom organization, cleaning, and preparation of materials as needed.

7.

Build positive, respectful relationships with children, families, and staff.

8.

Communicate effectively with assistant teachers, teachers and directors to understand daily needs.

9.

Adhere to the Code of Conduct and policies within the Child Abuse Prevention handbook.

10.

Model professionalism, reliability, and flexibility at all times.

Qualifications

  • 1.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework in Early Childhood Education (ECE) preferred.
  • 2.
  • Prior experience working with children in a licensed child care setting preferred.
  • 3.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing environments and routines.
  • 4.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • 5.
  • Valid Driver’s license required 6.
  • Must meet state licensing requirements for child care Teacher (CPR/First Aid, background check, health report, education qualifications, etc.).

Certifications

1. Bloodborne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year

Physical demands

1. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. 2. Stand, sit on the floor, bend, and move quickly to ensure child safety. 3. Work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, with Early Childhood Education coursework and prior childcare experience preferred. A valid driver's license and the ability to meet state licensing requirements, including background checks and health reports, are mandatory.
