Primary K-5 School Grade Level Teaching Assistants: General Expectations 2026-2027
The fundamental responsibility of each teacher assistant is to embrace the values and beliefs expressed in the school Mission Statement and in the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme. Assistants are expected to model the IB Learner Profile and support the philosophy of the PYP. Assistants exhibit a positive, caring attitude toward students, parents, and fellow employees and focus on student learning and well-being.
Primary school meetings
Attendance is required at the Teacher Assistant Meetings. Permission must be secured from the Dean of Student in order to be excused from these mandatory meetings.
Communication
- Internal
- Communication: Mailbox and e-mail should be checked each day in order to ensure intra-school communication. On a weekly basis, teacher assistants should read and familiarize themselves with any weekly or monthly memos sent out by staff and administration (i.e. Head of Division Newsletters, Weekly News, etc.).
- Absences: Teacher assistants are expected to e-mail Dean of Students and Head of Division Administrative Assistant when absent or when there is a change in schedule.
- Requesting time off: Please refer to the Employee Handbook for PTO requests that require prior approval.
OTHER
- The school policies and procedures should be followed in the Parent/Student Handbook and the Employee Handbook.
- The Primary School Discipline Policy should be followed and behavior concerns should be communicated to the classroom teacher immediately.
- Accidents must be reported immediately and an accident/illness report filled out as appropriate to the school nurse.
- Supervision duties (e.g. recess, lunch, and arrival/dismissal) are shared. Rainy day recess coverage and lunch when in the classrooms is the responsibility of the grade level team of teachers and assistants.
Teacher assistant evaluation
- Dean of Students and Classroom Teacher will evaluate Teacher Assistant.
- Dean of Students will inform the Supervisor if further action needs to be addressed.
Extra responsibilities
- Teacher work days are regular work days. Teaching Assistants are expected to be at their assigned station.
- Teacher Assistant will be available to work for the Extended Day Program on Teacher Professional Development Days, times should be verified with Dean of Students.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma required, Bachelor degree preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years working with young children in a school setting required.
