The School also provides vital early intervention and outreach services to visually impaired students, with or without additional challenges, throughout western Pennsylvania. Founded in 1887, our School is best equipped to care for and educate students with visual impairments. As a private institution chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the School educates approximately 200 enrolled students from 80-85 school districts within western Pennsylvania.

Position Summary

The Activities Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and facilitating recreational, social, and enrichment activities for students with visual impairments and additional disabilities, including those with complex medical and developmental needs. This role supports the school’s mission by creating accessible, inclusive programming that promotes student engagement, independence, social development, and overall well-being. The Activities Coordinator functions as an active member of the interdisciplinary team and performs duties consistent with their training and experience while supporting the unique needs of students in a specialized educational and residential environment. FLSA Status: Exempt Working Schedule: 204 days per year; Sundays through Thursdays from 3:00pm to 9:00pm (30hrs per week) Salary: $45,000 - $50,000 per year RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and manage a monthly activities calendar that provides engaging, developmentally appropriate recreational and social opportunities for students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities. Plan, coordinate, and participate in on-campus and community-based activities, including off-site trips, ensuring accessibility and appropriate accommodations for students’ sensory, mobility, and medical needs. Organize enrichment programming both internally and through partnerships with external organizations to expand opportunities for student engagement and community connection. Promote meaningful participation of students and staff in extracurricular activities that support social interaction, leisure skill development, and quality of life. Collaborate with community organizations, volunteers, and partner agencies to create inclusive recreational and cultural experiences for students. Adapt recreational, leisure, and creative activities to ensure they are accessible to students with visual impairments, multiple disabilities, and complex health needs. Evaluate the effectiveness of activities and programs and make recommendations for continuous improvement. Maintain an organized and well-equipped art and activity space to support student programming. Coordinate the ordering and management of supplies and materials needed for residential activities and special events. Provide support and serve as backup for the Residential Supervisor as needed to ensure continuity of programming and supervision. Vocational background preferred. Comfortable with technology. The individual must hold proper clearances for Acts 34, 114, and 151. Physical Demands / Work Requirements: The following physical demands are typical for a role in this setting: Ability to help lift and/or position students when necessary. Must be comfortable with lifting up to 50 pounds from the floor. Ability to lift and carry objects such as equipment, books, stacks of reports, etc, generally items weighing 20 pounds or less. Frequent reaching, bending, twisting, crouching, stooping, kneeling, crawling, sitting, and walking including up and down stairs. Pushing wheelchairs, moving/sliding student equipment. Ability to work in a hot humid environment in therapy pool area and outdoors during student activities and morning and afternoon transportation as needed. Communicate respectfully with multiple team members. Perform maintenance and upkeep of educational areas and therapy areas (i.e. OT/PT gym, clinic room, storage rooms). Assist with student enrichment groups and adapted sports programming as assigned. Ability to read and attend to computer screens. Manual dexterity skills for typing and use of various equipment. Comply with established policies and other duties. Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
