Position Summary

The Student Intervention Specialist (SIS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring effective individualized behavioral health programs for each assigned student. The SIS also assists the classroom teacher in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSP) for each assigned student. The SIS is a member of the classroom team.

  • Participate in all regularly scheduled in-service programs at the school.

  • Serve as a contributing member responsible for the educational and behavioral development of students.
  • 3.
  • Administer behavioral assessments and complete necessary documentation related to the assessments.

  • Help formulate the Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP) and BSPII if necessary.

  • Integrates experiential education activities into daily programming.

  • At the beginning of each school year and subsequently as needed, arranging the physical classroom setting (e.g., chairs, bulletin boards, meeting areas) to maximize the instructional atmosphere.

  • Demonstrates a proficient level of cultural sensitivity.
  • 14.
  • Instruct students in behavioral areas specified in I.E.P. through individual or group interactions.
  • 15.
  • Design and implement behavioral interventions.
  • 16.
  • Directly always supervise assigned students via visual and auditory contact during school day unless otherwise arranged with staff or students.

  • Follows designated program policy regarding the documentation of critical incidents.
  • 18.
  • Follows program-designated procedures for all physical contact with students.
  • 19.
  • Follows program-designated procedures for student illness and injury, including arranging necessary medical care and informing appropriate persons of the situation, and documenting the injury/illness and actions taken.

  • Assist other staff, as needed, in interventions (CPI, TCI, Ukeru) to protect students and staff from injury.

  • Transports students when needed and maintain safe driving procedures.

  • Maintains frequent informal communication with team members regarding student programming and progress.

  • Utilize technology through electronic documentation, electronic communication, and use of the internet to supplement programming and communication.

  • Complete record-keeping procedures for interdisciplinary reviews, including preparation of information to report to teammates (e.g., daily progress notes, data collection).

  • Complete summaries of daily progress, Interdisciplinary Reviews, and attendance information.

  • Receive supervision from and actively communicate with supervisor on an ongoing basis throughout the week by phone, email, written message and when possible, in person regarding program matters.

  • Provides in-service training to Pressley Ridge programs, with the approval of the Program Director.

  • Serves periodically on program committees, with the approval of the Program Director.

  • Risk Management and Safety 1.
  • Detect and remediate, with approval of Coordinator, if necessary, any potentially dangerous environmental conditions.

  • Know and comply with all state regulations regarding mandated reporting of child maltreatment, duty to warn/protect, confidentiality, treatment of minors, student rights, and Health Information Privacy and Portability Act (HIPAA).

  • Follow program-designated procedures for all physical contact with students.

  • Follow program-designated procedures for student’s illness and injury, including arranging necessary medical care - - (with approval of the Nurse, Coordinator or Program Director) - - informing appropriate persons of the situation, and documenting the injury/illness and actions taken.

  • When transporting students, maintain safe driving procedures.
  • Qualifications

    1. Education/Certifications/Licensure

    1. Requires high school diploma or GED. 2. Requires proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) within two (2) years of employment for the School for the Deaf. 3. Requires a valid state driver’s license, safe driving record, and current auto insurance for all locations except Satellite programs. 2.

    Working Conditions

    1. Physical Demands

    • 1. This position requires operating a keypad device 25% of the day and electronic/office equipment 25% of the day. Works in weather conditions about 25% of the day. Fingers, thumbs, hands, wrists, elbows, legs and feet are all routinely used throughout the day. The lower and upper torso is used 75% of the day. Employee must meet minimum requirements for hearing, speech, and vision. For positions in the School for the Deaf, hearing and speech are not required but ASL proficiency is (see qualifications above). Walking is required 75% of the day. Standing occurs 75% of the day. Sitting happens 25% of the day.Reaching above the shoulder as well as bending and twisting are performed 50% of the day. This function routinely lifts 10 pounds, 5 times per day. The maximum lift is over 50 pounds, 1 time per day. The position requires the ability to implement physical interventions and meet the physical demands of TCI. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. 2.
