Asphalt Green is seeking experienced, enthusiastic, and dependable Part-Time Swim Instructors to join our Aquatics team at our Battery Park City location. Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching swim lessons to children and/or adults using Asphalt Green’s curriculum and teaching methodology. This role requires strong communication skills, patience, water safety awareness, and the ability to create a positive, safe, and engaging learning environment for participants of varying ages and skill levels. This is a strong opportunity for someone who has previously taught swim lessons, coached swimming, or swam competitively and wants to use those skills to help participants build confidence in the water. What You’ll Do Swim Instruction and Participant Development Teach swim lessons to children and/or adults using Asphalt Green’s curriculum and teaching methodology. Support participants at varying swim levels, from beginners to more advanced swimmers. Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, corrections, and encouragement. Help participants build swim skills, water confidence, and safe habits in and around the pool. Adapt instruction based on participant age, comfort level, ability, and learning needs. Create a positive, welcoming, and engaging learning environment. Safety and Class Management Maintain a safe instructional environment during all lessons. Follow Asphalt Green’s aquatics safety expectations, pool rules, and instructional standards. Monitor participants closely and respond appropriately to safety concerns. Maintain professional boundaries and strong supervision practices. Communicate participant needs, concerns, or safety issues to aquatics leadership as needed. Program Support and Communication Arrive prepared and on time for assigned lessons. Support smooth class transitions and organized lesson flow. Communicate professionally with participants, families, aquatics staff, and supervisors. Participate in required training related to Asphalt Green’s curriculum, teaching methods, and safety expectations. Support a fun, professional, and team-oriented aquatics environment. What Success Looks Like Success in this role means participants are safe, supported, engaged, and progressing in their swim skills. A successful Swim Instructor will: Teach lessons clearly, safely, and consistently. Help participants build confidence and improve swim ability. Use Asphalt Green’s curriculum and teaching methodology effectively. Create a positive experience for children, adults, and families. Communicate professionally with participants, families, and aquatics team members. Show reliability, punctuality, and preparation for assigned classes. Maintain strong safety awareness at all times. Work well as part of the Aquatics team. QualificationsRequired Qualifications You’ll need: At least 2 years previous experience teaching swim lessons, coaching swimming, or swimming competitively at the club, high school, or college level. Ability to work at least one weekend day, either Saturday or Sunday. Strong swimming knowledge and comfort working in a pool environment. Ability to teach children and/or adults with patience, clarity, and professionalism. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow Asphalt Green’s swim curriculum, teaching methodology, safety expectations, and program standards. Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.
It would be helpful if you also have: Prior experience teaching swim lessons in a swim school, recreation center, nonprofit, school, camp, or aquatics program. Experience working with children, families, beginner swimmers, or adults learning to swim. Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, Water Safety Instructor, or other aquatics-related certification. Experience supporting swimmers of different ages, abilities, and comfort levels. Bilingual or multilingual language skills.
