Instructional Assistant Reporting to: School Principal or another administrator as designated by the Principal FLSA Status: Full-time, Non-exempt, 10 month Who we are: Bright Star Schools is a free, publicly funded and open enrollment non-profit organization with nine public charters in urban Los Angeles. Across all of our Bright Star sites, over 90% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Role Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Instructional Assistant to support our classroom teachers in delivering high-quality education to students. The ideal candidate will be responsible for working with students one-on-one, facilitating small group instruction, assisting in the development and implementation of lesson plans, and supporting student supervision. This role plays a vital part in ensuring every student receives the individualized attention they need to succeed academically, while also contributing to a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment. What you’ll do Basic Components of the Job Description for the Instructional Assistant position include (but are not limited to): I. Student Support & Instruction Provides focused lessons to individuals or small groups of students identified through the MTSS process Tutors individuals and small groups of students in various subject areas. Utilizes data to plan instruction and prepare for facilitating lessons with students Tracks data and goals, as well as communicating to students and supervisors Communicates student growth or areas of need to teacher, supervisor, and MTSS team, in writing and verbally to support further student growth Assists in maintaining student records and files. Supports with 1:1 or small group testing administration throughout the school year Operates equipment such as copy machines, computers and audiovisual equipment. Attend and participate in professional development Work closely with the teacher and other instructional staff to address student needs and contribute to ongoing educational improvements. Support communication with parents by providing updates on student progress or challenges, when needed. II. Student Supervision Provides occasional teacher coverage Supervise students in all indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring a safe environment. Supervise students during breakfast, lunch and snack time. Executes the Bright Star culture plan and training to support a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for students Encourage children to interact positively with other children and people around them. Maintain open lines of communication with the teacher and classroom team to ensure the individual needs of all children are met. Performs related duties as assigned. Any other duties as assigned. What you’ll Bring Minimum: At least 48 college semester units (required) Must be organized, creative, independent and self-motivated, enthusiastic, dependable, detail-oriented and flexible in scheduling and prioritization, and driven by excellence. Must possess good communication skills to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form, including accurate grammar and business correspondence knowledge. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships; demonstrated ability to communicate in situations requiring tact and poise; skilled in confidentiality and discretion. Must present a neat, professional appearance. Must be able to adjust tasks and focus with composure, and in accordance with changing deadlines and prior. Able to multitask Professional appearance (business casual) Desired (but not required) in order of importance: Bachelor’s Degree (Highly preferred) Bilingual in Spanish or Korean (desired) Cognitive & Behavioral Competencies Must be able to analyze written, spoken, visual, and other sensory stimuli Must have ability to understand and analyze written and spoken English Must be able to cope effectively with stressful situations and time constraints Must be able to make sound judgments based on available information Must be able to engage in frequent student/parent/coworker contact Must be able to remain calm in emergency situations Must be able to perform effectively under pressure and tight deadlines Must be able to maintain accuracy in tasks requiring meticulous attention to detail Must have flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and work demands Must be able to logically solve problems Must be able to provide and follow detailed written and verbal instructions Must be able to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and students Must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills Must have a passion for student success Must demonstrate strong organizational Skills Working Conditions/Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is generally expected to work indoors in typical school and office environments. This position involves: Occasional exposure to extreme or varying temperatures. Occasional exposure to outdoor elements such as sun, precipitation and wind or wet/humid surroundings. Occasional/ exposure to loud noise, fumes, smoke, dust. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job. Prolonged sitting/standing. Frequent walking. Must be able to occasionally/frequently lift, carry push, and/or pull objects of not more than 20 pounds. Must be able to frequently bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, climb, crawl, and/or squat. Frequent reaching and twisting, including reaching above shoulder height Manual dexterity, and finger/wrist and hand repetitions are needed; frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching. Frequent computer use, including use of keyboard and mouse. Speaking and hearing are essential to the communication needs of the position; constant hearing and speaking in person and on the phone, via remote video teleconferencing platforms. Must be able to be physically present at the worksite and occasionally travel for meetings or conferences.
