Position Summary

The Athletics Mental Health and Performance Clinician is responsible for the day-to-day service provision of the student-athlete mental health and performance for an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program. This position is responsible for providing one-on-one counseling, individual consultations, personal development sessions, collaboration with campus-wide drug and alcohol initiatives, and collaboration and consultation with team physicians regarding participation for student-athletes on a daily basis. The role will contribute to the promotion of the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program, including adherence to the Department’s mission statement and guiding principles and CSU’s Principles of Community. This position may require travel and/or varied work hours to include some nights and weekends. Located in the beautiful city of Fort Collins, Colorado State University is a premier land-grant university with world-class programs in education, outreach, and research. Essential Job Duties Maintain clinical and sport psychology caseload in a variety of formats with the purpose of evaluating, diagnosing, and treating mental health disorders and relevant sport-performance opportunities, consistent with the level of care required for a successful Division I student-athlete. Work in a collaborative environment to include sports medicine staff, team physicians, CSU Health Network staff, coaches, and others responsible for the healthcare and overall development of student-athletes. Maintain accurate psychological records in accordance with departmental guidelines and compliance with applicable state and federal regulations. Serve as a responder and care coordinator for mental health crises and emergencies by facilitating level of care and coordinating with campus and community resources. Serve as the mental health and performance point of contact for assigned teams to facilitate workshops, teach psychological skills for high performance, consult with coaches, staff, and other constituents. Assist department with educational programs and presentations for athletics staff and coaches related to mental health, peak performance, and thriving within elite athletics. Understand and comply with state and federal regulations regarding the provision of mental health services, and incorporate considerations provided by the NCAA and conference as applicable. Maintain good standing and licensure within the state of Colorado as a mental health provider. Participate in continuing education that facilitates relevant skill development and participate in multidisciplinary conferences. Supervision This position does not have supervisory responsibilities

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field from an institution of higher education Two years post-graduate experience practicing in the field of psychology or mental health Licensed or licensed within six months as a Professional Counselor (LPC), Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Psychologist in the state of Colorado Experience in providing psychological/counseling services to Division I student-athletes or athletes with comparable competitive levels, or comparable experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. or Psy.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. Preferred doctoral program/internship accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). Three years of work experience in intercollegiate or professional athletics, or a comparable high-performance setting. Experience in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating effective programs for assisting student-athletes at the NCAA Division I level of equivalent. Clinical experience with substance misuse and disordered eating in a student-athlete population. Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) Consultation experience within a university athletics department. Knowledge of psychological theories, assessment tools, treatment planning, and student development. Knowledge about, understanding of, and experience with supporting people impacted by social determinants of health. Demonstrated excellence in organizational skills, written, presentation, and group facilitation skills.
