Job description

NYS Certification in Physical Education is required.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 7: 30am-2:30pm

Wednesday; 7: 30am-3:30pm

Bachelor's Degree - $55,000

Master's Degree or 5 + yrs of experience - $60,000

Summary of duties

Provide physical education services for a class of students with developmental disabilities. Direct support staff, maintain records of student progress, and communicate effectively with families, students, staff and human services professionals.

Reporting relationship: Reports to Principal

  • Essential duties & responsibilities
  • Implement the goals on each student’s education plan
  • Assure that School District mandates are fulfilled
  • Write specific lesson plans that are creative and demonstrate a variety of methods for achieving student goals
  • Engage students in activities that are interesting, meaningful and individualized to reflect each child’s developmental level
  • Help each student to mature academically, emotionally and socially
  • Provide care and instruction to promote a safe environment for students and staff
  • Ensure a clean and orderly work environment
  • Formulate long-term goals and short-term objectives and implement all goals on each student’s skill level aptitude
  • Provide information about each student’s progress to appropriate family members and human service professionals
  • Attend CPSE-CSE meetings that may occur outside an employee’s regularly scheduled work day if requested by parents or school administration
  • Ensure that aides, assistants and foster grandparents work productively as part of the learning team
  • Provide clear and succinct direction to students
  • Utilize Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP) procedures when needed.

  • Advocate for each student when he cannot advocate for himself
  • Organize and maintain daily, weekly and/or monthly notes, reports and/or records required for each student
  • Establish an effective data collection and charting system to monitor students’ progress
  • Document progress toward goals at specific intervals (e.g., 3 months, 6 months, etc.)
  • Instruct in water safety and water behavior
  • Maintain a current inventory of Beyond Learning Center equipment and supplies. Ensure that equipment and supplies are used appropriately. Submit maintenance requests when necessary to ensure proper functioning of the room and its contents
  • Consistently comply with all Agency policies and procedures
  • Constantly maintain high professional standards at work with regard to personal behavior and interactions with other staff and families
  • Perform arrival and dismissal bus duties as assigned
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Principal
    • Skills & abilities
    • High level of written and oral communication
    • High level of interpersonal skills
    • High level of behavior management skills
    • High level of knowledge of educational principles, especially those that apply to students with disabilities

    Education & training

    Minimum

    • Must possess a BA or BS degree
    • Provisional special physical education teacher certification (either from the New York State Educational Department or accepted by them.) Permanent certification must be obtained and documentation substantiating same provided to the Agency within five years of provisional certification, unless a shorter duration is required by law
    • An acceptable background check (includes fingerprinting)
    • Certified water safety
    • Trained in CPR
