The instructor is responsible for leading safe and effective group fitness classes, including warm-ups, activities, and cool-downs. Additional duties include managing participant counts, ensuring proper exercise form, and responding to injuries with first aid.
Candidates must have a background in fitness or recreation and hold a certification from entities such as ACSM, NSCA, ACE, AFAA, or NASM. CPR/First Aid/AED certification is required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Under the supervision of the Fitness Manager, the Group Exercise Instructor will teach group fitness classes for the ASI Recreation Fitness Department. Responsibilities include providing safe, appropriate group fitness instruction for participants of all ages and fitness levels.
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Safely lead group fitness classes including warm up, stretching, activity, and cool down.
2. Welcome participants to class, conduct participant counts and other administrative tasks related to the program.
3. Ensure the safety of class participants through performing heart rate assessments, demonstrating safe and correct form for exercises, modifying exercise intensity levels, and appropriately warming up and cooling down.
4. Perform setup and takedown for classes as needed.
5. Maintain all certifications during length of employment.
6. Ensure professional and timely written and oral communication with staff, supervisors, and administrative staff.
7. Respond to injuries and assist in immediate first aid and proper emergency procedures.
8. Model, promote, and consistently enforce policies for the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
9. Attend staff meetings and training.
10. Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and/or Experience
Background in fitness, health, recreation, or related field and/or experience leading group exercise classes. Experience promoting safe exercise techniques, modifying workouts, and engaging diverse participants.
Knowledge and Abilities
A successful candidate will possess knowledge of recreation and fitness activities and the ability to connect well with students. Must be willing to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse group of student staff and volunteers. Customer skills, dependability and punctuality are a must. Must possess enhanced leadership skills and be able to work in a diverse environment.
Must be available to teach a minimum of two- 1-hour classes per week for the duration of the semester hired throughout the academic year. Schedules may vary based on departmental needs, and shifts are not guaranteed during winter and summer sessions.
