Position Summary
Building monitors act as a security presence, control access to the buildings, deter crime, and reduce risks on campus. Additionally, building monitors look for suspicious activity and notify WUPD as appropriate. Building monitors communicate with university community members in order to increase safety on campus and to request that community members comply with applicable rules, regulations, and laws. Building monitors do not physically intervene and will request assistance from WUPD when necessary.

Essential Functions
Observe and Report A. Eyes and Ears – Building monitors act as the eyes and ears of WUPD. They actively look for suspicious persons and activity, criminal activity, evidence of a security breach and people in need of assistance. Building monitors neither physically intervene with a crime in progress nor make any attempt to detain anyone. B. Notify WUPD – Building monitors notify WUPD of situations that require their attention. C. Notify building staff on Duty – Building monitors notify building staff of situations that require their attention. D. Write reports – Building monitors document their activities in a shift report. E. Incidents are documented in a detailed Incident Report.
- Reduce Risks A.
- Secure Any Unsecured and Unattended Spaces – Building monitors lock buildings as scheduled and look for and secure offices and buildings that have been left unlocked after the close of business.

- Identify and Report Maintenance Problems – Building monitors look for any building or facilities-related problems, including but not limited to water leaks, malfunctioning lighting, inoperable security hardware and building mechanical failures.

- Enforce Policies – Building monitors request compliance with certain rules and regulations put forth by the State of Kansas, the Washburn Student Code of Conduct and Residential Living Handbook, and in specific circumstances request a police officer for further enforcement action.
- Provide Quality Service While Representing the University A.
- Act as Ambassadors of the University – While in uniform be positive representatives and proponents of Washburn University.
- B.
- Be Friendly and Service-Oriented – Building monitors must be polite and respectful to everyone.
- They should seek to seem friendly and approachable, and provide assistance when the opportunity exists.
Other Duties as Assigned A. Building monitors will have other duties assigned to them as needed by their direct supervisors. B. Additional duties will generally be determined by the monitor’s specific working location.
Required Qualifications
Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher
Reliable Able to handle a variety of difficult and sometimes emergent situations Must be familiar with security practices Ability to make sound, independent decisions Effective communication skills Must be familiar with the facility Display a high level of initiative and maturity, Must have excellent customer service and problem solving skills. Physical Requirements
Work hours will be scheduled within these parameters: Monday - Sunday, 5pm - 11pm
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to those who have prior experience in security or similar fields, have CPR and First Aid certifications, are familiar with police radio operations, or have a valid driver's license.
