Job purpose
The Network Administrator is responsible for maintaining and supporting the College’s network infrastructure to ensure high availability, reliability, and security of campus data and voice systems. The incumbent will assist in the design, implementation, and troubleshooting of network systems, including switches, firewalls, wireless access points, and related equipment. This position works closely with the IT Operations Manager and other IT staff to ensure the smooth operation of network services that support academic, administrative, and residential computing needs.
Duties/Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Administer and maintain network infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless systems.
- Monitor network performance, security, and reliability, responding promptly to issues and outages.
- Assist in configuring, installing, and maintaining network devices in support of data, voice, and video communications.
- Implement and enforce network security policies, including access control, firewall rules, and segmentation.
- Support network-related projects, upgrades, and system integrations as directed by the IT Operations Manager.
- Maintain documentation of network configurations, diagrams, IP address allocations, and inventory.
- Conduct periodic network assessments and participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.
- Work collaboratively with the Help Desk and Systems teams to resolve escalated network-related incidents.
- Assist with planning and implementing network capacity expansion, upgrades, and technology refresh cycles.
- Provide on-call support for critical network systems and participate in scheduled maintenance windows.
Qualifications
Work Experience
2+ years of network administration experience in a medium-to-large environment required. Higher education or enterprise experience preferred.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications
Network certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, or equivalent preferred.
Computer Skills
Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking, VLANs, routing, and switching. Experience with Alcatel, Cisco, or similar networking equipment preferred. Familiarity with firewalls, VPNs, DNS, DHCP, and wireless network management systems.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. Excellent communication, documentation, and customer service abilities.
Special considerations
24/7 on-call rotation; occasional night or weekend work required for upgrades or maintenance; some physical activity such as lifting network equipment or cabling.
